Just wondering how different is a 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens from any other 100mm zoom/prime lens. I dun really understand the 1:1 reproduction ratio point. Can someone enlighten me pls.

Is there any difference in picture angle or does the macro simply have a shorter min working distance. Never handle a macro b4, just curious.

Many Thanks

The 1:1 reproduction ratio simply means that the actual size of the subject is reproduced on the negative, ie. if you are shooting a 10cents coin with a diameter of 1cm, when at 1:1, the size of the image on the negative is also 1cm. The angle of view etc is still the same as other 100mm focal length lenses.

so pple use macro lenses to do closeups bcos of the shorter working distance? as in can get the subject to fill more of the frame by moving closer?

in that case y dun pple juz use longer lenses to make the object fill the frame instead of moving closer. the change in perspective shouldn't be too obvious rite despite the longer focal length (lighting conditions aside).

the longer the focal length of the lens, the further the lens have to be placed in order to reach focus, so even with a 500mm lens, not likely to get a gd close up shot of an insect.

Unless your longer lenses is also 1:1, otherwise at its minimum focus distance, you are still not able to achieve the magnification of a 1:1 macro lens.

Yup, macro lenses have closer working distances, allowing you to fill the frame. Try borrowing a true macro lens and see how it's length change when you set it at 1:1. The physical length of the length almosts double, which is also equivalent to adding extension tubes to the lens. You can achieve the same sort of 1:1 reproduction ratio using a normal 100mm lens and adding extension tubes, using the approximate formula:

Magnification = Length of extension used/Focal length

Most long lenses can't focus close enough to get the sort of magnification desired. And cost is also a prohibitive issue in building a long focal length lenses which also allow close focussing. Just check out the price of the Micro-Nikkor 200mm f4.
