question about scanning

read up many of the past issue that scanning in the lab itself doesn't have many tumbs up or fantastic comment about how good the lab is . could this be the machine ? thinking of getting a slide scnner but then these past thread suggest that lab scan only do aceptable results. so how good will the slide scanner comparred with the lab?
