purchasing external flash unit

What do you guys check when you are purchasing a flash unit?

1. can fire off
2. can ttl with cam ?
3. does it have good to have features ? - eg built in bounce card and/or diffuser , variable output control etc etc
4. can tilt and swivel the flash head ?

What do you guys check when you are purchasing a flash unit?

-able to fire consistently all the time
-consistent ttl output, and flash exposure compensation is working.
-output power close to guide number
-infra-red assist focusing is working
-if the flash has AUTO mode, you might want to test it as well. It can be a life saver when you change camera systems in an emergency.

- Try on camera, snap... and check the exposure
- Try wireless (set as slave)

check if the flash come with battery.
