Public Shooting Etiquette

Just wanted to hear the views of the experienced guys on shooting in public..

Was at the Botanic Gardens last Saturday to do some random shooting and try out some technique but felt that I was hampered by my apprehension to shoot freely.. especially when shooting kids.. joggers.. etc.

Hope that the oldbies can share some experience on this..
