Prop Luck day under Esplanade bridge
Date: Sunday, 19 September 2010
Time : 8am to 11am

Location to meet : Under Esplanade bridge between esplanade and esplanade park
The location is good as it is sheltered. We will be here for the whole duration.
If there is very strong winds or heavy rains we will retreat to the esplanade underpass basement area next to the citylink mall

Each person will list one prop that they will bring on that day.
We will shoot the pictures using the props.
I will be explaining how to plan a shoot with props.
I will explain on how to light the pictures with flash with umbrella use natural light if needed.
This is to help us be more creative, plan and practice our skills for future photo contests.

Items to bring

Any small props that you deem necessary for your shoot
DSLR
Flash
Tripod
Flash triggers if needed otherwise check whether your camera allow off camera flash usage
Translucent umbrella ( Daiso ) or flash shoot through umbrella
I have 4 pairs of flashes and triggers to lend out to let people try.


Everyone is welcome even if they do not have the right equipment.
They can join the teams and share the equipment.
They can learn and then decide what to get if they want equipment.
We will use ourselves as the models if need be.

There is no price for this free outing as it is meant for everyone to share their skills.
Just come along and there is no need to inform me that you are coming.

Some clarifications :

Anyone can join, whether you have flash or no flash, tripod or no tripod, camera or no camera.
No need to register with me.

A prop is any item that you think can enhance a photo.
Example : I have a diamond and it could be used to make a picture about romance or marriage.

Hope that clears up any confusion at this moment.

Some shooting tips from a pro stock photog called Joan Vincent.

If you shoot every day, you will eventually get good.

There’s a big difference between concept and story.
Everyone tries to shoot concepts. Go beyond the theme / topic of the image and show what happened before and what will happen after.

A story can save a picture but a concept will never save a picture. A concept is one of many ingredients, but the story is the complete recipe.
The story is what is remembered.

Images can create more questions than answers.
Create an atmosphere that matches the idea of the image.

When everyone else is shooting stereotypes, you will make more money creating characters.
Create ideas and keep a notebook to record them.
The best source of ideas is your own life.
Ideas are like Bonsai. They are small and detailed, not big and expensive.

Stock photographers are no longer just photographers because they shoot the photos they want to shoot. They are now art directors too.

Joan still rarely shoots with professional models. He continues using his family and friends.


He's one of those people I regard as a hero or someone to look up to in my career.

Thanks for coming for this outing.
The next two weeks schedule will include a mini marathon contest at Jurong Japanese Garden Rest House 8am next saturday 25th sept 2010.
A light painting outing at 7pm at Botanic Gardens Botany centre wednesday 29 sept 2010 ( Tentative as still looking for alternative locations ).
Lastly, a mini stock picture shoot at 8am sunday 3rd October 2010 at marina sail condo clubhouse that is aircon and has three sides of white walls (still tentative depending on whether room is available).
