Printing photos

good evening

got some questions. i got some photos that i want to print out. besides doing pp such as color correction, cropping, etc... what other steps are recommended b4 sending to the print lab?
also if i want to print 4R, what is the size ratio (length X width) that i should give to the lab?

4R 4 by 6 inch, based on 300dpi 1200x1800 pixels.

but lets say if i crop my photos to different size for every photo...
wats a good way to make sure the Length X Width proportion stays the same?
