Hey guys,

My younger brother who's 13 is always hunched forwards and no matter what the family says to correct him it doesn't work. He is a bit tall for his age.

I'm looking to buy something that he can wear(gotta force him) if not to school then at least at home to straighten his back and push his shoulders backwards.

I found one from ANS healthcare that costs $99 wondering if there are cheaper alternatives? :dunno:

Does he have a medical/physio condition, or is he just lazy?

Has he been checked by a medical professional yet?

I feel it's not advisable to anyhow approach something like this if he has, or might have a medical/physio condition.

If he has been checked by medical professionals and found to have no medical/physio issues, well, then it's a matter of conditioning or enforcement. Which would be more effective, less intrusive and preferable for all involved?

not to frighten anybody...but it could indicate some form of spinal issues - the earlier the detection/treatment the better and faster the outcome. Advisable to get it checked out by orthopaedic; pediatrics; or whatever - get the GP to refer him to the correct specialist department.

For eg. ...I hv a cousin in HK (14 yrs old) who was just diagnosed with Pectus Excavatum (or hollow chest) and is already affecting his breathing and heart physically. In a way, the diagnosis now is a bit "late" as he's had it from birth and only at the age of 14 was it diagnosed. :)

Never thought of it that way.

Though when he was younger his posture was fine. It only started when he was around P5.
It looks like the laziness in him is becoming more enforced with himself.

Sometimes it's not just laziness, but a response to a condition (and symptoms of pain or even something as mild as discomfort), but because the person has little or no knowlege of possibilities, he suffers in silence.

I would check for any abnomalities to determine/rule out medical conditions first, then seek professional advise as to how to proceed.

Honestly, a bad posture can be corrected by a good posture. It needs constant reminders from the person himself/herself and people around him/her.

Change a chair with lumbar support will sometimes help effortlessly. Building muscles to have good posture takes time, plenty efforts, discipline and determination.

Hi TS

your brother could get an upper back harness. i used it b4 to correct my posture. a cheaper slower alternative compared to surgery. it was recommended by a TTSH specialist. basically it is like a cross at your brother upper back tat loops over and under your brother shoulder. tightness adjustable with a velcro strap. it will certainly make him to be in discomfort but this will den remind him to keep his back str8 if he doesnt want to wear the brace. yeah.

Cheers

Where can this be found?

Just buy big camera backpack and load all you heavy cam body and lenses and spare batteries and get your brother to carry. after a few outings he should be fine. :) LOL

OK I am joking. Hopefully it is nothing serious and he will become better.

Where can this be found?

U can find it at Guardian, about $120+. Most of us (old and young) now tend to sit in front of computer for prolong time and causing our back to hunch without knowing it. I use it and it works, the first few days is a bit discomfort due to it actually forces the backbone to straighten up.
