currently using 17-70 sigma and 50mm 1.4 fa
anyone can advise which is a better lens for street portraits and wedding dinner shooting ?

think ermm crop ..

since you own both lens, you should take them out and try, then you will have a better understanding of your lenses and your own shooting style

Just bring your lenses out and try and you will know. Else, you can develop you own style if you use one or the other.

Generally speaking,
17-70mm - for wedding dinners due to the versatility of focal lengths (full table shots to portraits); This lens sure can do streets as well, just give it a try.
50mm - for street with its smaller size. You'd be a bit hard pressed to do full table shots with this one. :)

one lens do both?

the 17-70mm.

17-70mm - definitely for wedding dinner shooting, more versatile.
You will have space constraint when taking in 50mm.
Unless you have a second camera for the 50mm lens.

50mm and 17-70mm - both are ok for street portraits
50mm gives you nice bokeh
while 17-70mm gives you details for your background.
Street portraits will have time for you to change and experience both.

* pls note that 17-70mm can produce nice bokeh too.
