Sigma 30mm f1.4 or Nikon 105mm VR?

Which is better?

depends on how close you prefer to be to your subject. i have seen very nice portraits from both lenses. i personally think the sigma to be more versatile, as you can use it for other type of shots besides portraits, whereby the 105 can be restrictive at times. Your call on whether you think you need that extra range and whether it justifies the price difference.

ei, 30mm will be 45mm in 35mm format. 105 will be a bit thight. for me i use 60mm f2.8 Nikkor.

or, you can go with the 50mm f1.8. but the best for portraits is the 85mm.

either way, it's your preferrence.

30mm = 45mm
50mm = 75mm
60mm = 90mm
85mm = 128mm
105mm = 157mm

best portraits are usually done on the 80mm to 105mm range (35mm format).

so, take your pick
;)

its depend on your style of shooting, i use my 17-55 extensively to shoot portrait. I would prefer the 105 VR to shoot as I would like it up close and personal.

sigma 50-150 f2.8 HSM for me...

Get the 85mm f1.8 or 105 f2.8VR:thumbsup:

What's your budget? Important question! :)

Can i safely say that the 105vr has the sharpest iq of the lot mentioned here?

d40 ah.. must get a afs or hsm lens for autofocus.. not much choices left..

105mm is too long on a Nikon body IMHO. As mentioned above, it works out to a whopping 158mm or so - that's way too far for portraiture in most circumstances!

i think that it has been mentioned before, the focal length really depends on your shooting style.

most would advocate the 50mm and the 85mm as the top 2 placements for portrait prime lenses on digital (1.5x crop), the 105 and the 35 are usually take distant 3rd and 4th placements. the only focal lenght with an available nikkor lense to AF on the D40 body is the AF-s105f2.8microVR (not the 105f2DC).

if budget was not a contraint, you could consider the AF-s28-70f2.8... but that'll be quite a stretch of the budget. else can also consider the sigma 24-70f2.8 or the 50-150f2.8... or get comfortable with manual focusing through the "tiny" viewfinder... :sweat:

the sigma 24-70f2.8, HSM ?

Unless you spend sometime in PP, I think your model will be very angry with you shooting him/her with the 105 macro.

hahaha, that sharp huh?

no lah, stand further back only to take picture, not macro on the face

Get any of the focal lengths you like. Just have to MF only mah.... :bsmilie:

Anyway, this is not meant to be a serious camera. :sweat:
