Hi bros,

Am looking to buy a new PC, and now looking at some models of LCD monitors. Targeting either 19 inch or 20 inch. Just like to hear all your comments on:

1) Normal or Widescreen
2) Brand: Which is good? Viewsonic, Samsung, Philips or others.

Not a gamer, but using photoshop for photo editing mainly. Any comments welcome thanks!

iirc most 19" are just 6bits, while most 20" are 8bits. but there is a pretty steep price jump from 19" to 20". (350+/- vs 500+/-)

I'd go for a Samsung for it's technology, brand and contrast ratios. ;p

Sorry for another newbie question: What does the extra 2 bits mean? picture is clearer? Resolution is better?

more colors. 16.2m vs 16.7m.

Hello, personally i am using philip perfect panel lcd. When there is one dead pixiel, you can bring it for service for FOC. However, I waited for 2 months to get it done as they say that they do not have the spare part to replace. Therefore, they had changed 1 panel for me after waiting for a long 2 months. :)

Finally, the colour is not bad (Graphic Card play an important role too). Power consumption is also impt as it's a long term issue. So I had chosen philip as it fit my criteria.

Furthermore, nowadays the prices of lcd had dropped. I suggest you look at the specs of the LCD before making your choice.

Hope my comment is useful to you

what is the recommended min contrast ratio ? is 500 acceptable for some non professional editing work on photoshop? am thinking of getting a 19" for my spreadsheet and photoshop too. Looking at LCD with at least 700 : 1.

Go for:

LG L2000C 20.1" LCD (8ms/Silver Colour) DVI+VGA $888 @ Fuwell.

Using LG-Philips S-IPS panel

Else DELL 2007FP 20.1" - $699 or Dell 2007WFP 20" (Wide) - $669

Both using Samsung's S-PVA panel IIRC.

Thanks for all the advice brothers, finally I hav just gotten my new monitor yesterday, a samsung 205BW... 20 inch widescreen...contrast 600:1 price abt S$480.

no regrets, great monitor!
