Hi all,

I am new to this forum and need help on an ideal place to go for my boyfriend's birthday as he is a Canon 400D DSLR owner and love photography alot. In fact, I need to sign up as a new member so he will not suspect its me as he reads this forum alot. :p

I am planning to bring him somewhere nice in SG, of course, on a weekend morning to afternoon for photoshoot of scenery, birds, buildings, etc. Eh.. One thing, I hope that place will not be too crowded.. We have been to Bird Park, Sentosa and Zoo already so we can skip that :p

And if possible, please also let me know what I need him to bring other than himself and his cam? Tripod? .. Sorry.. I'm a total noob here.

Any one can help me? Your replies are very much appreciated! :)

I'm very new to photography, but I do think that you could bring your boyfriend anywhere? I'm sure he'd appreciate the effort and that alone would make his day. ;)

As for suggestions on good places to go... :dunno: Have you tried the Botanic Gardens yet? You could even try taking a walk in town (though it'd probably be difficult and awkward to take pictures there.) I'd suggest taking a walk in a park of sorts, perhaps East Coast Park?

Anyway, I wish you two all the best for your date.

hi!

Thank you for the suggestions! but we've went to both the places you mentioned.. (ECP and Botanic Gardens) heehee..

I was hoping to bring him to some beach... but we have no car... So it might be very hard to go to those places...

Where you normally take your photos at? Maybe I can learn from you guys.. :)

What does he really like to shoot?

I think you can rule out birde for now cos serious bird shots usually photog go alone and spend hours hiding in the bushes ... unless you wanna hide in the bushes with him.

Depending on how prepared you are / how much you want to do, you could draw up a simple plan something like:

1) 7am - meet and go to one of the reservoirs - lots of scenery to shoot. Have a quiet, simple breakfast at the resevoir itself. Can also let him practise his portrait and poses shooting with you as a model. LOL! Sometime lucky, also got wild animals. For the breakfast, pack a simple picnic like sandwiches lovingly made by you (or his fave BF food), and have pet bottles of frozen drink (non-aerated) to make it through the humid morning. Be sure to pick up after you makan. ;)

2) Move off by 10-11 am as it would be too hot already to hang around reservoir, then start moving to Little India or China Town. Little India is preferred cos still got a lot of authenticity where as China Town already totally refurbished and commercialised.

Do the famous Nasi Brayni lunch and teh tarik at Tekka Market Hawker Center (not the eateries along Lil India), and at the same time, shoot the hawker center candids. Move off and be sure to explore all the little and back lanes in Lil India. Sunday being a market day, it would be a riot of colours as most of the stalls would be fully stocked. Again, tons of photo op for streets, candids, buildings. Hungry or thirsty all along the way got shiok food and drinks. This should provide enough photo op for the entire day, but if you want variety ... by the time you go from the Tekka Market start to almost the end near Mustafa Center, you can take the Farrer Park NEL ...

3) Move off again by 4.30pm latest and take NEL/MRT go to the Eastern End of the island. Take bus to Changi Point/Village in time for sunset photo op. Along the way, there would be interesting scenery and if lucky, some birds (?)

4) By the time sunset over, move to the near-by Changi Village where there are many small cafes and have a cosy dinner. If you're not in the mood for slow and romantic, but want gung ho, noisy and shiok, go the the hawker center.

After dinner can stick around and explore the surroundings, or go to one of the drinking holes if he likes. I don't think Charlie's at the back of the hawker center is still there, but the other outdoor 'pub' might still be, so the both of you could finish the evening with cold drinks under the stars.

For #4, actually if you do dinner at one of the cafes, you could plan a small surprise party by calling his close kakis or photo kakis and organise a simple bash. Or even if you have dinner at the hawker center, why not be really different and give him a birthday to remember? Celebrate it with tables of his buddies around, do a tame version of a table or lap dance for him and then do the birthday cake thing in the hawker center itself! Make sure there's someone else taking pix of the celebrations.

By the time everything's over, guarantee he pengz liao.

I'm sure other CSers will have better suggestions, but basically you want to provide him with the most photo ops within each location, and the difference parts of the island for variety.

Sun sets in the west.. maybe labrador or west coast better choice?:dunno:

Dream Merchant's itinerary is very well planned! you can probably do it!

sunset at changi broadwalk is nice! along the west end of singapore, i've not heard of (due to my noobness) any really nice spots for sunset. furthermore, the changi end area has lots of good food and chill out areas.. just dun go to the wrong side!

as for Dream Merchant's point 1.. 1 caveat emptor, do note that some (if not all) reservoirs have monkeys. they MIGHT turn aggressive and come and snatch your food.

do have fun on that very special day! but do be careful! make sure u do your part to clean the places clean! :)

join the newbie gathering 4 to shoot at sungei buloh + kranji war memorial

just went kranji war memorial today, up there its a hill where u can shoot nice sunset but the bad thing is someone will close the gate at ard 6+ and u will haf to climb out, hee, its definitely one of the good place to catch sunset in the northern area

just my 5 cents worth

Thank you so much for the itinerary!! It is very comprehensive and I'm really grateful that you took some of your time to reply me, thank you!

#1. I found this place here with the bus schedule - $2 for unlimited rides.. Is the trip ideal? Prolly a morning breakfast there, then followed by bus trips around the places?

#2. I like this idea! We've been to Chinatown many times but not Lil India. How about Arab Street? Is it good for phototaking?

#3 + #4.
Guess what? I had the exact same sentiments! In fact, I had already planned a surprised dinner for him in town... involving some 10+ friends of his. The dinner was a BIG headache due to the number of pax I had (Hard to find a place to book on weekends) but that's another story.. ;p

Once again, thank you for the valuable response!

Should I go kranji for the tour or reservoirs? Maybe I should bring a bunch of bananas there so they will not snatch my food :bsmilie:

Hi!

The kranji war memorial is good for sunset only? Because I had a surprise birthday dinner for him so it means I can't go there... :(

Btw when is the newbie gathering? :)

No problems lah ... I oso always have problems planning places to go wan, so ironically I end up walking around aimlessly! LOLZ! I Need sum1 else to plan 4 me!

Besides, it's so sweet of you to want to plan something that your photog partner would like, soooo try to help a bit la.

http://www.kranjicountryside.com/template/farmpreneurs.html sounds smashing! Looks like TONS of photo op there, but be sure to bring the insect repellent (oso for the reservoir if you do choose that route). The Koi farm and Bollywood veggies are quite shiok places I hear. But still, be sure to check timings and keep an eye on your watch cos it's quite far out. Always check busses schedules etc...

Go, go, Lil India is really shiok, and the food at Tekka Market is super (and really affordable), so remember not to pig out too much at breakie! day time on a weekend is not so crowded as the main crowds come only after 3 or 4 pm.

Since your dinner is planned in town (I assume town as in near Orchard?), going from lil India is no problem. Can freshen up along the way oso.

Oh ya, actually food at the reservoirs may not be a good idea nowadays if there are wild monkeys around. Bringing something to 'appease' them only makes matters worse.

Aniways, all the best and most important, prepare ahead (water, insect repellent, matt foundation and concealer [hehehe], schedules, emergency snacks like chocs, any necessary or emergency meds etc etc etc) for a smooth day and consider problems - like make back-up plan in case it rains. Pack two small brollies so that you can hold one, and he can hold one while he takes portraits of you in the rain? Can end up being quite romantic-like photo mah!

CHEERS!

I saw the sentence "like make back-up plan in case it rains." and I shivered a little. Ya what if its raining? Then the plan goes down to the drain..

I gonna print this itinerary out! hee hee!!

Btw, heard of this saying before, that the bad thing about having a boyfriend with a passion for photography is - While on a date (and every date that is), you will become the caddygirl? *carries tripod and sulks* so there won't be any romantic shots lah! haha!

THANK YOU!!! CHEERS!!!

Not always la ... but you could offer - then if it gets too heavy, teh him a bit lah. Most guys are more than capable of managing equipment themselves. If I'm shooting seriously, I may have 1 cam bag, 1 large haversack for strobes and other stuff, my 5kg tripod and I will also carry my wife's bag if it's heavy. If I'm styling, I have a much heavier load. I would never ask her to caddy my equip. But if I pengz, I'll ask her to carry me! LOL!

Don't worry unnecessarily. Just look up the SG metrological report on the inet 2-3 days ahead and think about alternate plans in advance in case rain is forecasted.

HAVE FUN!

Oh, forgot your earlier question - Arab St a bit dead as in not that many photo op as compared to Lil India. Nice food though, but over-priced. Zam Zam brayni is nowhere compared to Tekka Market, but their murtabuk is super shiok and great value!

 Don't know where my heard it from, and ended up telling me that I should carry his tripod when he goes photographing  Btw, I thought normally phototaking alone will be better? You bring your wife along? Sometimes I just grab his cam and take the photos, hopefully will be able to share some when we get back from Kranji!

As for Arab St, you made me feel very hungry now in the mid of the night. Haha!

Next time I will grab my bf to go outing with you people! He needs tips in phototaking manz ;p

Only on some assignments, and tell your bf it's a FALLACY! Unless he is willing to buy you a carbon fiber tripod!

I don't know about phototaking, but I know a lot about makan-ning! LOLZ!
