Pictures in memory card gone! How can I recover?

Hi guys...just reached home after my trip to Yunnan. Had a great time but sadly I lost some of my pictures in my 512 MB XD card.

What happened was while at Lijiang, I went to one of the photoshops in the Old Town and tried to burn my pics into a CD. That guy used a card reader and on the PC, I got 6 similar ones for each picture. For example, if I have DSC1, DSC2 for the picture names, I would see 6 of DSC1, 6 of DSC2, 6 of DSC3 and so forth and not all the pictures appeared on the folder. Out of 394 pictures I took at that time, I was only left with 142. So that guy said my Xd card was 'Shui Huo' and I then tried to tranfer it using my own USB cable and got the same problem.Worse was to follow when I put the meory card back into my camera and those pictures that did not appear on the PC gave me a 'Read Error'. Only those 142 pictures were viewable.

I cant believe such a thing happened and I was really down from that night. Some of my pictures in Kunming and Dali were gone and all those pictures from Dali to Lijiang and in Lijiang itself were all gone. Thats 252 pictures.:cry:

Does anyone know what could have happened and more importantly is there any way to recover back the pictures? I dunno if its because when it was read into the card reader and the memory card was somehow formatted. There are really precious memories in there and I am just really down at the moment.

In the meantime, don't attempt to ovewrite or format your card.
Use the FREE PC inspector software as mentioned in my thread.

But the problwm is with my XD memory card....not my hard disk......

Thanks ransoma...it worked a treat and I manage to get back a lot into a new folder. There are some which cannot be retrived though as in only say 10% of the pic was recovered so only 10% of it reappears. The file size is like 30KB when it should be 900+ Kb. Do we retry the recovery process on the memory card?

Cos each recovery process take quite long. So can I like delete away those photos which are fine and then recover the ones with the READ ERROR?
