I didn't realise that all these while I've been saving something which has different color than the photoshop work. When working on PS the color is more saturated and 'contrasty' while the option of save as and save as web renders the color duller/different hues. I already set my color settings as srgb and convert profile to srgb before I save as, but how come my working space in PS shows a different color?
totally confused newbie :(

If you want to see how your pic looks like (on your monitor) on the web, you need to proof the pic in Monitor RGB

After selecting this proof setup you can tweak the pic - saturation, etc.

btw make sure you are working on a duplicate copy.

proofing in Monitor RGB will just give correct colour for your own screen... how the colour shows up on anyone elses screen is hit or miss...usually miss...is best not to use it...

the thread suggested by Castlesinthesky covers the main points
