hi, not sure if this is the right forum, but does anyone know of photography tour outfits to overseas locations guided by pro photographers? there are lots based in the states and europe, but they're bloody $$$ in terms of land cost alone, never mind the airfare.

There are over here also but quality may not be as good - that is the organiser simply arrange, get models, etc and will not guide much like in US. I attended once and the expert say "Use P mode!"
I am quite disappointed when he said that.He was using top of the line body + lense and we are using entry level. How can compare esp if doing street shooting?
Plus the brand loyalty is so strong so if you are using different camera brand then you are out of luck.
In US they will quickly review photo on spot and let you know the angle and composition, and at night or afternoon where light is no good, explain post processing plus do some photo critique. They will try to help out as much as possible and go thru the manual with you if your camera brand is different.
So if you got very basic skill you will be disappointed by the tour done here.
You will get nice photo because they will bring you to photogenic places, arrange model and help with lighting, choose good timings, things that you cannot do alone or done with package tour but not dedicated to photography, but it is difficult to learn on the spot.
What is good is that you travel with other photographer and it is easy to reach agreement eg: tomorrow wake up at 4:30 am because we want to catch sunrise, or it is OK to eat biscuit now and have dinner at 10:00 PM because we go really far into the remote place to take sunset (at 8 PM summer-time) and will not reach hotel in 2 hours. Or have crappy food outside but take really nice pictures.
In short, you get what you pay for - plus the price here (at least regionally) is cheaper than in US and EU anyway.

well if it's cheap i could do with the barebones tour version (arranging logistics, sunrise and sunset shoots, models, right place right time issues) - where did u go and which company did u use in asia? which one in the states?
i have done some courses before, so would not need instruction on the basics. of course, it's nice if there's instruction because the best place to correct/detect mistakes is on the field.

i dun think guided photographic workshops would be cheap.
alternatively, you can just lead or join one of those trips from cs. free and easy, no models, and learn from practising. once you get a group of 3 and above, transport and accomodation will become easier and cheaper. free and easy also allow you to try locations at sunset or sunrise hours. of cos, no models. your travel mates are your models.

I think it would be better for a new photographer to take more pictures first or join some workshops to derive more value from a tour.
At the very least, get the novice mistakes out of the way before spending that much on a tour.
