Photography in Jogjakarta

Hi all,

I'm planning to travel to Jogjakarta next month and was wondering if any of you have any tips for location, time to shoot, equipment to bring, etc. I do know that I MUST visit Borobudor but apart from that, I have no clue.

I'm planning to bring my 10-22mm and 15-85mm with my 70D. Not too sure if it would be worthwhile to bring along my 70-200mm.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Next month is summer so expect plenty of heat & humidity.
Drop the 70-200mm since Borobudor is mostly landscape. If pressed for portrait, 85mm should be sufficed.

That is bad advice. 70-200 is a must have for me for Borobudur.

It really depending on what you want to shoot in joyakarta although I would suggest you keep your option open as it is such a beautiful place with many different subjects to capture.

If you are only interested to take just the way of life of maliboro, the historical buildings ( eg. taman Seri) or the different corridors of relief on the walls of Borobudur temple than a wide angle lens would be good.
You will need 70-200 if u need to take closeup shoots of Buddha statues at Borobudur temple or Hindi statues at three Prambanan temples or the grandeur of Mt Merapi, just to mention a few.

I took 3 lens - 24-70, 16-35 & 70-200 - along for my trip last march and used all of them throughout my 4 days there. Will definitely go back again since Taman Seri will be renovated and this time round the sunrise at Borobudur!

Thanks everyone! I think I will take mostly landscapes and street photography. Why I am considering to 70-200 is because I used it to catch some great shots of monks when I was in Myanmar. Not too sure if there are such subjects in Jogjakarta.

Apart from what is mentioned. Best place to shoot the sunrise with borobudur is not within borobuduur itself. A great option is to go up Mount Setumbu and shoot the sunrise from there. And for that shot, a long lens like 70-200 is essential. There are several more locations to shoot borobudur at sunrise do explore. After the sunrise at around 7am, then go into borobudur complex itself and climb the stupas.

And if you are lucky, you may run into some very interesting scenes, like this... We stumbled into these scenes, when we walked around the villages.

If you have the chance, do visit borobudur during vesak day, and you see it lit up with spot lights.
