I would strongly recommend photography books that are not by local photographers. :)

There are plenty of good photogaphy books out there. Drop by Borders or Riceball.

Sounds pretty acerbic to me..:nono: Everyone has his or her own style..don't criticise a local published photographer unless you can have claimed to even have one single picture published.

Jeez..

Yes I do have. But not point going into that.

I did not criticised any local photographer (anyway, which part of my thread mentioned that??) but instead suggested to the threadstarter to refer to photography books outside the country for more learning exposure.

Please read and understand the thread from a broader perspective.

Gd day,
Jon

Btw Snow_One, there aren't many local accomplished photographers that have their works published yet. Probably the ones you've seen at the major bookshops are all that's in the market at the moment.

Cheers
Jon

I suggest looking at works by BOTH local and foreign photographers as well as asian and western photographers to have an understanding of perspectives and contrasts in light of their backgrounds and where they're coming from

What's wrong with criticising whoever he wants? The last statement about credential is a joke.

Taking baby steps ... will open another thread for western photographers after getting some books out of this one:)

check out some of the local magz(foc) on the photolab tabletops. Some features local works.

Or just browse the galleries in this forum.

I also seen quite a few books by Chinese, Korean and Japanese photographers both here locally and in bookshops in HK and China.....one of them is "328 Outstanding (Japanese) Photographers" available if u order from Kinokuniya at about S$60

Sebastiansong should be able to easily triple the Asian reading list above with titles from the Middle East, India and the Far East.

Hope that asian photography develops its own 'vision' and its own independent perspectives

Me?Act smart?Since when did the proper English become a penal offence?:bsmilie:

Let's get back to the discussion at hand shall we...

Whilst I agree that there are better overseas photographers,
we should not be too quick to judge and demean local photographers.
Afterall, if we do not support our local photographers, then who should we support?

It is true indeed that we can and ought to learn from overseas photographers
as they may have acquired better techniques. However, as far as taking
shots of local sceneries, landscapes, buildings, iconic structures are concerned we ought to look to our own photographer. It is because they are locals that would have a more heartfelt sentiment and perchance, a more genuine and 'nationalistic' (or anti-nationalistic for that matter) angle of the Singaporean spirit.

Be kind. Give our local photographers a chance. If not you - us, then who?

We are all Singaporean leh.. of course must support Singaporeans!! Kudos to Russell Wong! Aih Say! Russell Wong the best!

Damn..nothing could be further from the truth.:p

I saw the Ken Seet East Timor series at Singapore Discovery Centre. The actual prints.
It is very good, well to me that is....

Have an open mind is the most important, doesn't matter whether the photographer is local or not, but what can we learn from his/her pictures......

You might want to check out the photography sections in Kinokuniya. They have quite a good selection of photography books. Or visit Zhongling from riceball,a very friendly guy.
