What are the benefits of taking up photography as
a hobby vs photography as a business?

Welcome any input or personal opinion. :)

as hobby no need to worry if not making money, quality no good, no need to chase payment from client, no need to advertise, no need to worry about other people stealing my photography business, no need to worry about misrepresentation by imposter, etc etc etc

As a hobby do you feel that you have more freedom
in executing your creative juices?

As a hobby, you have time to think. As a biz, you are forced to deliver.

As a hobby, you can do picture whorring, as a biz, you can be treated like a whore.

As a hobby, you can tell your subject to fly kite, as a biz it can be otherwise.

As a hobby you are the master, as a biz you can become the slave if not careful.

Either way, you still need to pay tribute to the brand owbers for maintainence and replacement.

can you tell your boss, today you don't feel like working, will only be back when you are happy?

so as a hobby, you can suka suka shoot, but you can't do it when it is a business.

That's the best so far... and you see it, say it and perhaps
seize it, h'mm, appreciate your input.

So many many wanabes are waiting to jump into the
bandwagon for they didn't see that hounddog yet,
maybe they just see that rabbit and it's alright for
them at the moment.

Well, it is time for the many to reach the seize-it level
to call out to Caleb as in Joshua 14. ;):)

Business, Stress to get paid
Hobby, Pay to release stress

Business = Not fun anymore.

btw, making extra pocket money ≠ doing business

because you can always make some money by shooting for people, but you will never make any profit unless you treat it like doing business.

uh. lolz. shooting for pocket money is also business. its just small scale. ~~

photography as largescale? sucks big time. newbies stand almost no chance against those with 40 years experience.

unless ur super talented. which is rare.
pocket money maybe. not so much stress. hobby is play liao dun want then stop.

Professional photography calls many and admits few for more than a short while.

Amateurs have the advantage of not having to interpret art directors or worse yet, the photographically illiterate commissioning office manager or CEO / Advertising manager in many cases.

Amateurs generally can't get their a$$es sued for screwing up a job.

Amateurs don't have to invest shed loads of money to remain competitive every few years.

Amateurs don't have to worry about where the next meal is coming from when the big client you just blew 10 grand on doing a small assignment for fails to pay.

Amateurs don't have the bank manager breathing down their neck .. "I want a word with you about your overdraft"

Amateurs don't have to deal with modelling agencies (real ones) and spend hours to days going through thousands of head shots with the art director to find the perfect model for that all important photoshoot for said client.

Amateurs don't have to be able to work under intense pressure and normally don't have deadlines to deal with.

Amateurs can usually pick the time of day to do their shooting.

Amateurs don't have a reputation that can be shot to bits by one bad day at the office (photographically speaking).

Amateurs don't have to attend endless meetings with clients to finalise a job.

Amateurs don't have to be businessmen, contracting specialists or copyright gurus, unlike professional photographers.

Amateurs equipment doesn't get the thrashing that it does when used professionally.

Just a few differences......

As a business, I dun think any professional PG dare to tell customers to go fly kites and format the CF cards after an AD wedding shoot.

As a hobby, I dun like the photos, I can format my CF cards anytime, no worries.

The answers are pretty obvious.

When you shoot for money, no monkey-business, no room for error etc. I usually take 2 cameras, shoot 2x etc. The 2nd shot with 2nd camera is usually for "insurance".

as pro you can complain that ameteurs spoil the market

well, as a hobby, you answer only to yourself. you shoot what you want, you go where you want, at your own leisure..

satisfaction gained from photographs is your reward, and it is in general, a money-burning activity. you have to work to sustain photography as a hobby.

if you do photography as a primary source of income, you have to do what the client wants. if he wants you to take ugly photos, you have to do that. if you tells you that your photographs, compositionally sound as they are, are bad photographs, you have to listen to what he wants and take centre-composition, bad lighting, horrible angles that make your stomach curdle in disgust at what you are doing.. but the money talks.

and yes, the plus point is that while you're at it, sometimes you can enjoy it.. and you get rewarded with more than just satisfaction.

pro photographers, some will tell you that it is a hell job.. then my question is, why do they do it? because they can't do anything else? there isn't a single job in the world where you can get away scot-free and make believe that it is a holiday or day in the park.

most jobs will involve dealing with difficult people. some will have you managing your own finances. some jobs require upgrading. some jobs require keeping up appearances, if not in terms of camera equipment, there is always a facade to put up to convince people that you are doing well. there might not be art directors, there might not be modelling agencies, but there will be organisations and people you have to rely on when working with them as a team. all jobs , you can ruin yourself with one bad day, if it is bad enough.

is it a heck-care, free and easy job? no. but are there any such jobs? no also.

as a pro you can keep repeating and announcing that you have to BBB loads of equipment and list out the value on public forums proudly.

as a pro you can constantly tell non-pros that they will never know what it is like, and that "in a pro job, this will be different, blah blah blah, i know more than you".. can 倚老卖老 and feel good about your life and strut around like a cute little peacock at jurong bird park.

well, sometimes! :bsmilie:
