i am a freelance photographer for 11 years.Iwas thinking of setting up my own studio but with additional support of being an agent for all photographers in all industry.I am doing a small part of photography, but to have all kind of photographers in my poll will add on business and to strengthen the industry of not being underpaid!
What do u all think?
Good idea?
All u need is to get a set of portfolio and price and my sales will helpmarket for you.At the end of the day i will get a 30%commission from u.
What do u think?
Yes or no?
Pls advice

Sounds good, I'm free to take up jobs for you as well. You get the same 30% cut? PM to discuss more. I'm open for ideas

I'd be most happy to when I resume work again after my As this year. I'll PM you again at the end of the year to check again.

Are you going to provide any equipments?
Who owns the rights of the images?
30% commissions, does that include loading?
Any contract or bond?
how about producing cost?
as a photographer yourself, how can you be sure that you're fair to the other photographers in term of jobs and assignments?
I have heard of 2 photographers from the same studio pitching for the same job with different portfolio and in the end, the BOSS got the job, cos the other 2 are just associate photographers.

I am sorry if you think i am asking too much, but I think there are some ppl out there who are more interested to know more about this...

I'm not a pro or anything, neither do i own much glass or stuff. But i was just wondering if i could work for free by following some of you guys around? just to gain more exposure. I don't mind giving up some stuff i snap too if any of it is deem good enough. :)

BEENING A PHOTOGRAPHER IS NOT JUST ABOUT TAKING EXCELLENT PHOTOS BUT A VERY FRIENDLY AND GOOD SERVICE IS A MUST.IF U ARE MR OR MISS SHY or have a STUCKUP attitude >U ARE NOT CUT UP FOR THIS>>>>>>>>
1]Are you going to provide any equipments?
yes for studio,but outdoor no
2]Who owns the rights of the images?
You if customers allow, but pls portfolio do not anyhow poseon the net.
3]0% commissions, does that include loading?
loading? 30% commission clear cut
4]Any contract or bond?
no bond.but contract maybe, terms and condition apply.U r free to do other or your own job,but pls be ethic-no personnel namecard are allow and u are not allow to undercut or take customer away. very simple
5]how about producing cost? depend, but mostly u are the one.
6]as a photographer yourself, how can you be sure that you're fair to the other photographers in term of jobs and assignments?
Fair?nothing in this world is fair :bsmilie: it really depend on customers budget and requirement. In this photo industry, there are too many type of photography so as a pro most of us will only be in a few of the catergory but not all.
7]"I have heard of 2 photographers from the same studio pitching for the same job with different portfolio and in the end, the BOSS got the job, cos the other 2 are just associate photographers.":)
If this is the case,i'm afraid the two associate are of a slightly lower standard or price higher cos nowsaday customer want good and cheap.
My ideas is to bring all kind of honest friendly photographers [pls not those who are boostful and act as if they are that capable type, attitude must be right-average humble]and help sell their service.[This way is a double win win suitation for me and u-my guys will market and get the sales whereas we concentrate on our service.]
In our mrket, there are many black sheep selling a very low premium but they still get a lot of job.I would not want to get myself into stealing others job just because i command the market and sale,in fact,i earn a 30% commission once the deal is close. Moreover,i am a human with only 1 body,at the same time if there was to have 2 event going on,do u think i am able to do two at the same time.
;)
i welcome all advice and comment.thanks

i am looking for all kind of photographers.
Each must produce an album with all their portfolio prefer to be in 8R size.
this album must be accompany with a passport photograph of u at the front of the album and inside with a cd with a slight intro of u and images in low rest of types of photos u do.
If u know how to DI pls also add in a images of before and after.
cheers...Let make this works!!!!!!!!
Example
Wedding day photographer
fashion ...
product...
advertising...
food.....
jewellry....
arial....
Bridal...
etc:thumbsup:

So how do start. Should we like sit down and discuss further. I mean if all of us are street PGs then you'll be getting tons and street shots and none of the rest. Just suggesting

no, one works for free here, its a dirty word, very sensitive.

Hi All,

Photo-Representative is not popular in Singapore at all... rather the use of a producer is seemingly a lot more useful... So much is always said about having photo-rep, or restricting copyright use....

Let me just name a few ways to doing it without a Photo-Rep.

1. When you portfolio is good enough, paddle around by flipping editorials, go through the editorial board and contact the creative person in charge...

2. Always start low, and climb slowly. There's never a one off fame. Start by serving FMCG clients by means of making cold calls yourself, and slowly work your way to get better clients. Everybody has an equal chance if your work is good.

3. When you start off in Singapore en-route to becoming a photographer, surely one would have enough time to see your own client and possess a right ownership over them, and always offer value added services. Why would you even be lazy to find somebody to represent your work. In the European countries, the top photographers has Photo Rep, simply because he's far too busy shooting, and that's the reason he needs a rep. Furthermore, Photo-Rep has a proven track record of opening & closing accounts for photographers, they're head-hunted by the photographer, instead of the other way around.

No direct harm to the rest of the people who maybe in interest over this subject. How one photographer charges over or under another is all up to the comfortability level of the clients. In short, there's really no control over price issues.

Personally, I can only see it failing. Shout it out loud for having good works, however, this industry is about good working attitude and shows no mercy for egoistic people.

Having a photographer who doubles up as a photo-rep is a sure conflict of interest... For example, STUDIOLABMASTER perhaps has 11 years of experience who may just outweight a lot of hopefuls out there... Having the rest of the new photographer in this sense would only create more job opportunities for the STUDIOLABMASTER because now he has better works to outweigh many hopefuls. STUDIOLABMASTER would have taken the jobs without having to answer to the rest and would have merely shruck the hopefuls off with 'The clients selected my work'...

Having said that, some hopefuls may have their work represented by STUDIOLABMASTER, for some reason, these hopeful's work are seemingly better off than STUDIOLABMASTER.
After being commisioned the first job, the clients would prefer to deal with the photographer direct the next time(if he's good). It'll be silly for the hopefuls not to be even distributing his own namecards. In that sense, STUDIOLABMASTER would have lost a few jobs off his control and would have not done anything damaging to the hopefuls than just calling them silly names and accused them of under-cutting or stealing clients. Which in truth, the hopeful guy didn't even try anything...

With so much doubts as to what may happen in the near future, might as well everybody do their part for this industry and keep themselves busy with your own stuffs...

As a matter of truth, other than the household names like John Clang or Leslie Kee, I do not see another being represented by a photo-rep. Being working in this for the past years, in my opinion, Photo-Rep is not needed.

Thank you for reading... Pls kindly give some thoughts.

Hi STUDIOMASTER, what you should be wanting is associated photographers under your arm... I've been an associated photographer before. Let me straighten some doubts to what I know..

1]Are you going to provide any equipments or breakdown of equipment?
STUDIOLABMASTER to provide for all lightings and misc, except camera & tripod(must be photographer's own).

2]Who owns the rights of the images?
STUDIOLABMASTER

3]0% commissions, does that include loading?
Loading never happen, 40% to STUDIOMASTER, 60% to associated photographer if job is given by STUDIOMASTER. 30% to STUDIOMASTER, 70% to photographer if job's brought in via photographer's contact. Dividends to be made once client makes a payment. The dividends must minus outsourcing and be a open book to the photographer...

4]Any contract or bond?
No contract or bonds, no working hours if there's no shoot. The photographer is free to poach anybody, it's a free trade industry. There is really no such thing as 'your client', 'my client'... There only good and bad photographers. Having said that, it's always nice to not bite the hand that feeds and always be grateful.

5]how about producing cost?
STUDIOLABMASTER for all outsourcing cost and transports if the client is his.. If the photographer takes a taxi, he takes a receipt and claim it off the job. However, if the job comes off the photographer, he does it vice-versa, because STUDIOMASTER cannot bear the losses of outsourcing should the client do not pay.

6]as a photographer yourself, how can you be sure that you're fair to the other photographers in term of jobs and assignments?
It's definitely a conflict of interest.

7]"I have heard of 2 photographers from the same studio pitching for the same job with different portfolio and in the end, the BOSS got the job, cos the other 2 are just associate photographers.":)

That's the reason why I said it'll be a huge conflict.

For the many hopefuls who wishes to be represented by a good studio, pls look up for HanChew studio, be it video or stills. This studio has been widely known in Singapore, and is GST registered(made millions)... They have a full crew of producers, and people needed to complete a TVC or prints ad.

Do call them and show them your work, they take in associated photographers under their umbrella, however they're do not take everybody and is stringent in looking at your work... You ain't gonna know if your work's good or not... but if you run by studios like HanChew, you'll probably know where you stand and than work towards your goal...:)

That I agree... Good thing no cheap, cheap thing no good... Free??? then again, pity the guy who does really wants to gain exposure only... The photographers with asst ain't that many though... Guy who wanted to work for somebody, pls look up for 121 studio, they just may employ.... not bad employers, should be able to pick up a lot... just work like crazy because it's a 7-11, always open...

my point is simple ,photo rep is not a must but a good start. If u think u r capable to get so many dealS and do all kind of photography by yourself, great.
But for me i believe in -no one is a master of all,
a good photographer specialised in certain kind of photograpsH,not all.
tO PROTECT yourself,i am open to all ideas but DO NOT CRASH MY THREAD!;(
Also for every portfolio given,u are to indicate your own potrait photo of yourself and also each pc of photo u give in 8r must be accompanied with your name at a corner.
For me,i could only say.trust and believe is the only thing to works things out.If u are scared ,than forget it.anyway u or me got nothing to loss.
I do mainly human shots..........i am not a master of all:)
If i was to get 5 jobs a day,do u think i am that capable to do them all in the same time.
If each job cost $300 total will be $1500.my commission will be S$450 if all are sub-out.
I already had a small pool of freelance photographers, but the idea was to bring more out of each one and my sales marketer will not have a chance to slack, cos if we are joined togeteher,we basically covered the photography industry and to me,its just like a singapore photographer liberary.
Conflict, yes, maybe.only if one is charging $300 and the other one is $1000 which the $300 produce the same or better results.....:bsmilie:
Hopethis tells u what i am trying to do.............
