MSRP on pentax forums is in USD.

lol... :bsmilie:

the K-5 price in US is still US$1468 which is approx S$1900, a couple hundred more than the pre-order price in SG approx 4 months ago! SG pricing is good

You need to do currency conversion from USD to SGD:confused:

Is S$1 = to US$1??

I don't get your point.

Btw, USD 799 is body only or?

Anyways, different countries will have different pricing. Same for things like Lensbaby, etc.

Just like Marks and Spencer in London is cheaper when converted to SGD, there is no such thing as purchasing power parity : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purchasing_power_parity

As stated in the link, there is no such thing as transaction free costs. For example, if a product originates from the US, there will be shipping fees, transportation fees, additional export tax, etc.

Similarly, if you're talking about Big Macs in US versus Big Macs in Singapore, even if the ingredients cost the same in a common currency, the labor costs are different. It's really basic logic.

Do your Maths!!

799.00 USD = 1,022.37 SGD
1,599.00 USD = 2,046.07 SGD

1 USD = 1.27960 SGD

i think you will see a better picture if you remove the currency... right TS?

I think what he meant is
MSRP from web: K5 price is double of Kr price (799&1599)
SLR Price (say Singapore retail price), asking price for K5 is (about S$300) more than 2 x Kr price.;)

Since we're comparing against (US) prices, can I contribute by giving the prices in the UK?

K-r (with 18-55)
£449.00 ~= S$928.47
less the 20% VAT (£74.83)
£374.17 ~= S$773.73
link: SRS Microsystems

K-5 (body only):
£969.00 ~= S$2,003.76
less the 20% VAT (£161.50)
£807.50 ~= S$1,669.80
link: SRS Microsystems

where £1 = S$2.0679 = USD$1.616

Too bad I'm a student not eligible for VAT refund. :(

Current Pentax pricing in Singapore is one of the best worldwide. TS, please also factor in the cost of shipping back to Singapore and the 7% GST (which is computed based on the cost of the item and shipping cost). Then factor in the additional effort needed to request for an international warranty card. At least if you buy through Emjay, there is the option to extend warranty beyond the standard 1 year for a small fee.

That's new, usually UK prices for Pentax are much higher than elsewhere.

Though if I'm not mistaken, the Limiteds are still more expensive here. Just don't buy though Amazon UK. The K-r sold there is nearly 50 quid more than SRS's.

Now, all I need is just someone to help me claim the VAT. Hmmmm.

I think the implicit question TS is asking is why is the price difference is not consistent for the two products? i.e. K-r is cheaper if bought in SG while K-5 is cheaper when bought in US. you'd expect both products to be more expensive/cheaper if its just simple currency exchange rates, shipping costs etc.

One component of pricing is the volume. A large market like the US means that the cost that Pentax USA gets from Pentax Japan is likely to be different compared to what our Singapore agent might be getting. Also one also has to work in other associated costs such as distribution and warehousing costs, exchange rate, etc. so it is very hard to make an apple to apple comparison.
