I'm considering these 3 models.

Reason why I want Panasonic fz28 is because it is more convenient, dont have to change lens yet able to take great photos and lower maintenance.

Nikon d5000 - because my friends are Nikon users and if I get a nikon dslr, we could share lenses.

Canon 500d - I personally prefer this photo quality to d5000.

Brand wise too. I trust Nikon or Canon more.

How can you compare a fixed lens to a DSLR? Why not take a look at the Canon SX1 IS, G10, etc?

not comparing their features but rather comparing my needs.

i would want one that doesn't use AA batteries as power source and have video function. that boils down to the 3 models as mentioned while i've ruled out others.

Seems that image quality is your priority. Go for the DSLR then. No experience with the Nikon, but I've tried the EOS 500D and it's very good.
