Hi all

Got to find a place to vent and rant ... :( To cut it short, just received orders for overseas posting in indonesia yesterday. Although I have harboured thoughts of it for the longest time, I actually don't feel like going now?! In the past, it's always 'why not me?' or 'why is XYZ going and not me?' ... when it's finally materialises ... getting sleepless nights.

I don't have an option and departure is slated for in less than 3 weeks .. Granted it's only a 2 hours flight each way but I can only be back once every 60/90 days pending project status ... aaaarrggh! Don't know what is holding me back? Don't even have the guts to tell my folks at home ... sigh ..

I think I am really abnormal ... given the fact that the pay+allowance will be substantial  and probably a bright spark for my career advancement ..

Go la...have more exposure and find out that the world is larger than just singapore. You will gain lots of experience overseas and see how things are being run abroad.

60/90 days quite alright unless you have your own family here. my 2 cents.

I have been posted for the past 6 months in Indonesia. I am enjoying it really. Food is cheap, the only place I can actually afford to drive, traffic is hellish though.

But really, you can enjoy lotsa stuffs which you cant enjoy in Singapore. Its great!

Remember to bring ur camera and start a picture a day (numero) until u come back !

If you are single, ya go ahead man. You have been waiting for this opp for so long. If you want to grow, you must break out from 'comfort zone'. by the way you can come back once every 2-3 mths.

But if you are married, different say lar. Please consult with the 'finance minister' first. ha2.

Don't know where in Indonesia u r talking about. But if is Jakarta then can always come back on long weekends wat? I have pple in my office going to HK and back (like taking a bus)
on weekends.. improve your bahasa Indonesia pak Numero...

GO for it....Bigger things surely will come after it. its a good break.

I think you are similar to me in character. I also kind of apprehensive when I go overseas. I went UK 6 months for my IA and 2 months to USA for work.

Both times I also quite apprehensive when I go overseas. I worry about my GF/wife. I worry about what happen if I fall sick alone and overseas.

But on the bright side, I thought both trips were very interesting (after I came back) and you do get to experience a different kind of life and culture which you can't experience on vacations.

Go for it, a few months is actually quite ideal. Long enough for the culture experience, short enough that it doesn't disrupt your local life/relationships.

Go my man...

1) pay is higher and allowances is good (as posted by you) If you dont have vices, it is good time for you to save money as you dont have many friends there and you will be working most of the time.

2) Look good on your resume

3) Learn alot more than if you are staying put in Spore. Trust me end of the day we will all become marginalised as we look more and more towards foreign talents. So why not be a foreign talent and work overseas.

4) Indonesia is not so bad a place to go to. You are lucky you are not sent to a war zone like Iraq.

Hey...I am working in Pekanbaru , Sumatra now. Where will u be heading to and what kinda industry?

Seriously Indonesia is not that bad a place to work in...food and culture is almost the same...well...the variety of food isnt as good and much as in Singapore but u will survive...one plus point is the people here are very friendly...coupled with good pay and the close proximity with Singapore...what are u waiting for?

I have been wanting to get out of Singapore all the while when I was studying and when the oppor came I just couldn't wait. Trust me...living and working overseas alone will change u and make u a much stronger person...that was the advice I got from many people.

Yes go for it. As per many of the advice already given, many tend to be on the positive side. Talked to a few regional managers, and most find Singaporeans hardworking and efficient, but when it comes to relocation, many are hesitant to do so, because of family and other reasons. Hence there are times when i think it can be good not to be attached when such opportunities come, you can just leave without much restraint.:bsmilie:

Anyway I would think with lowering airfares you can get to come back more frequently that you think. Ultimately this is a decision you have to decide for yourself, and it could pave a brightly lit road for your future endeavours. ;)

If you are still single, grab this chance to see the different culture and enviroment, dont wait you tie down with family or GF and you will face a lot of problem:sweat: . My first trip out was the same as you, after that trip, now I'm getting prepare looking forward going aboard seen than total of 5 yrs spenting in oversea.:bsmilie:.
why the different enviroment and people to work with and lots of places to travel. Have a open heart and see the world, maybe when you come back do a slideshow for us on the places you visit;)

Think of all the whole new photo opportunities!

go ! becos Singapore now not much opportunities.. except the coming casinos.
