overhaul OM-2sp in Singapore...where?

Hello BooChap

When Olympus announced the cessation of production of OM3/4Ti on Jan 2002 and associated lens & OM system accessories by end Mar 2003, it was stated that parts & servicing for these two models will continue to be maintained for the next 10 years ie. till 2012. Prior models such as the 2SP are not covered & approaching Olympus Singapore will not be fruitful. You will need the services of private camera repairman.

Maybe as a member of the Oly webring, you will already know of John Hermanson of CamTech http://www.zuiko.com, he will have the parts & specialist skills to tend to your 2SP. However, it will be adminitratively difficult to do so as he had a few nasty experiences dealing with Asian & is reluctant to trust repair requests from this region (grrrh, the black sheep!)

I do not know of a local repairman who can do a good job of repairing your 2SP, esp if it involves circuitboard changes.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Hello BooChap,

I had a thread on the E1 mentioning a forgettable experience with Olympus Singapore when I sent my OM4Ti for servicing about two years ago. They forgot about my OM4Ti after it was sent in & only after a user initated call did they follow up with servicing.

Maybe you can refer Oly Singapore to this link (although is intended for the japanese market)

http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/news/2002a/nr020117omsyse.cfm

You can request to have your OM4Ti sent to Japan for servicing. Such practice applies to old models of Leica & Rolleiflexes when local reps lack the parts & expertise to repair discontinued models. Of course there an increase in turnaround time & quite likely price of repairs.

Sadly with the response from Olympus Singapore, your best bet (and mine) is with John Hermanson at CamTech. Unfortunately, according to John, Olympus has increased the price of replacement parts, so servicing will be expensive. But John has the equipment to calibrate the spot meter in the OM4Ti, take it apart to lube all moving parts, & replace foam pieces that have deteriorated with time. He is dedicated to servicing OMs including your 2SP.

My apologies if I had not made this clearer before.

Best regards

hi boochap,

you can try calling up the cameras shops in peninsular area, like Prime or P&G at aldelphi. they specialise in repairing manual cameras & lenses, and might still have om parts.
i heard the om-2sp, om-4 have the common battery drain & electronic problems.

regards.

thanks for the response...actually that was a typo mistake, shld be the OM-4T. i have the om1, 2sp and 4T....i am now more like a photographer-turned-OM-hardware-collector.

the OM-2, 2n and 2sp have significant battery drain problem...4T/Ti is an improved version of the OM2's.

e.g. on OM-2sp, if u r on auto and u light up your viewfinder with the side buttom, the shutter will freeze and batteries start to drain...do this a few times the batteries will be flat. i seldom need auto mode, so it's not a problem afterall. I tried this with OM-4T, no such problem so far.

Try Bally photo traders at level-3 far east shopping centre (near Borders). The owner deals with OM stuff and is known to be good in servicing OM equipment.

If you don't use the timer that often, then I suggest that you leave it as it is.
Going through the hassele of private repair man locally or overseas is not worth the trouble and cost. Might as well get another OM2Sp if you happen to come by.

OM (SLR) users most dreaded the kind of support from Olympus Singapore...
Even I've asked them to indent the series 2 screen 2years ago, the price they quoted me was about $80++ which I need to wait for 3 months vs I got from Japan at less than $50.

We always keep our finger cross that nothing happen to our OM bodies, etc but that is never possible due to wear and tear. It is not surprising that the E-1 could be discon in less than 2 years time and no spare parts is available too...

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL !!!
cheers

Hello Teo,

I share your sentiments with regards to Olympus' poor OM support. Sourcing for Zuiko's & accessories meant paying premium prices overseas. Lucky you to get your Series 2 screens at such a good price, I was paying $70+ but from B&H.

In fairness, as an early E1 adopter, my experience is better, & despite easily being one of the 1st E1 user who's send one for servicing, response was quick despite the planned renovation at their service centre, an offer was even made to courier the camera to my house, finally I've got my $200 cheque from Olympus on the eve of 2003 from the rebate voucher issued at Olympus earlier E1 forum. However, the servicing did not fix my reported problem with the E1. So two steps forward, one step backward :-(

This thread started as OM & will be kept OM. So, it is reasonable to assume that you get better support with Stylus, Camedia & esp the professionally marketed E-system cameras. For OM, Sriram has made a good suggestion to try local servicing. I'll pop by to check out once my house renovations are completed.

Best regards,
