Out Of Focus

I've taken a few shots using AL Focus and some of the shots are out of focus. i'm about 100 meters from the subject and used high shutter speed 1/1000 at f/5, I cannot figure out what is my mistake. Perhaps the experts here will enlighten this newbie. Please take a look at the photos and you will know what I mean if I've not been specific.
Lens used is a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 DG HSM.

Seems more like you're focusing on the background rather than the subject.

You are basically focusing at the background. If you are using (you are probably using a canon) a Minolta you can select the focus area. In your case center would be OK.

Should use manual focus area (to select the focus point on the screen so that you can aim the subject at for the camera to based its focus on) instead of auto focus area (in which the camera chooses the focus point based on what it thinks, sometimes incorrectly, is the subject you're trying to aim).

I think i knw why... U wanted to compose using rule of thirds rite? But u also want the focus to be on the wakeboarder at d same time.

Here's how u shud go about it
1) Focus on the wakeboarder (using auto-focus). The focus should lock once you press the shutter button halfway
2)Hold your shutter button halfway and recompose so that yr subject is at where u want it 2 b in d frame
3)Fire away (press the shutter button fully down for the uninitiated;p )

Happened to me also when i first started off... Din know wat was wrong until a fren told me the technique... Hope tis helps n happy snapping!:cheers:

And since it's a sport which involves fast action moves, AI Servo is required rather than AI Focus.

Wow, u trying with fast action shot here. Your main focusing point is so small (i.e the skier)
Could it be your lens auto focus not fast enough to lock on to the focusing point that u want ??

if possible try pre-focus at somewhere the wakeboarder might went through. (ie. the platform dat he is on top.) den focus lock and shooot..
