I was thinking of getting a Safrotto bag previously, but decided to get a crumpler bag instead. Never regretted my purchase. Was having 2nd thoughts about the Safrotto, as like you mentioned, I found the padding too thin, and was afraid it would not provide adequate protection on the move.
The price could be considered cheap if you compared them to the original, but they don't provide the same level of protection and durability. Since we've already spent so much on the camera, we should spend that bit more to ensure that the camera is well protected. Besides, I don't find Safrotto bag really cheap either, The L100 which I was looking at was about 1/2 the price($45) of the LowePro original($80+), but it does not provide 1/2 the protection and piece of mind. The only thing going for it was a good looking design. At that price range, there're other bags that provide better returns.
Just my 2 cents worth of view. YMMV. Cheers
