I use a C2100.. I'm wondering if anyone noticed that SQ high-quality files are larger than HQ files. Is this normal?

From what I see in the manual the quality grade is something like
EQ->SQ(low quality)->SQ(high quality)->HQ->SHQ->TIFF

yes.. I noticed it too..between 2 oly cameras..
I opted for HQ, gived me abt 70 shots per 64mb SM card.

I'm not sure where to find the firmware info, so here's everything.

I've just formatted the 128 mb card I've got and tested it again. Here's what the camera reports, all are 1600x1200 except where indicated.

Type | number of shots

SQ(normal 1280x960) | 399
SQ(high 1280x960) | 140
HQ | 257
SHQ | 90
TIFF | 22

Pegasus1010 is right. In this case the firmware is version 73, like mine (v352u-73).

For those who want to check the firmware version:

1) Go over the pic or thumbnail with your mouse
2) Right click
3) Choose properties
4) Go to summary
5) Look for 'creation software'
6) The last 2 digits should be the firmware version

Got to know abt this from Olympus Talk forum in dpreview.

Your question is very generic and confusing .

At the SQ mode there is 3 resolutions like 1024x768 800x600 640x480 .

In what resolution, do you have the problem ?

For actual comparison , you have to set the HQ mode at the same resolution with the SQ mode .

All my SQ results above are from SQ 1280x960.

I can't seem to set the resolution for HQ and SHQ, only TIFF and SQ.

My SQ options are different. I'm presented with 1280x960, 1024x768, and 640x480. Each SQ resolution is subdivided into
High and Normal quality.

So basically, what I have is this.

TIFF - (4 res) 1600x1280, 1280x960, 1024x768, 640x480
SHQ - set at 1600x1280, I think. Can't find any place to change res.
HQ - as above. Can't seem to change resolution.
SQ - (3 res) 1280x960, 1024x768, 640x480. Each res subdivided into normal and high.

1280x960 1024x768 640x480
Yes you have right about this settings .
I had my batteries on the charger , and my above opinion was based from memory . ( And i was wrong )
As also about the HQ resolution change .

But the point is , that i still do not understand what bothers you .
The rules in the JPEG file compression is one international standard .

HQ files is 1600x1200
SQ high ,is files with less resolution and higher quality .

Your problem is ,that your comparison is wrong .
The right way is to compare is SHQ 1600x1200 with SQ High at 1280X960 !!
This files will have the same quality and compression , and naturally the SQ file it will be smaller .

From the other hand , you can compare the HQ mode with the SQ Low , this is the right balance ;)
