They've made another announcement on a even newer standard!!
Hot on the heels of the Four-Thirds website introduction, the
Olympus, Fuji, and Kodak consortium has announced the far-reaching
Three-Furlongs standard:
"We felt that we didn't take the idea of using a confusing and
obscure standard from obsolete technology far enough. The new
Three-Furlongs format takes us boldly into anachronism in a way
that Four-Thirds merely initiated."
"Four-Thirds only dates our thinking back to the 1950's Vidicon
(obsolete TV camera) tube standards. Our team tried for a standard
that provided the most market confusion possible, and we've had
great success. We knew that consumers would assume that 4/3 had
some relationship to the physical size of our imaging chips or even
the aspect ratio of the format. But by referencing the image circle
diameter required by an old Vidicon TV camera tube, we feel that
rampant market confusion will drive the sales of the 4/3 system far
beyond the zero units already sold. We also enjoy watching people
try to make sense of this."
"With the Three-Furlongs standard, we are giving our marketing team
7-Leaque boots to get out and really baffle the market. We expect to
have the Three-Furlongs system available by MMIV, or MMV at the latest."
