off-camera flash cord with D30

Hi,
Have been having a bit of a problem. Recently bought a D30. Tried using a 380EX with it using a canon off-camera flash cord. the arrangement works perfectly for my EOS 50E. Can also use the 430 EZ with it perfectly. But with the D30, the flash mounted on the cord is just not recognized and isnt fired. Any insights? Is a different kind of cord required for D30?

But how is it different? Is it mounted on the hotshoe as well?? or is it connected to some other place in the camera?
