Any advice on the essential filters that one should get?

Am considering to buy a polarising filter. Does anyone have any experience with it to share? Was told that it makes the sky more blue...

You may want to get a basic UV filter for your lens. Mostly it serves to protect your lens. In addition you can get a polarizer. It does help to cut down reflections and also it helps to bring out the blues as you have put it when u take the sky. It can also serve as a ND filter of sorts.

If you shoot B&W you may want to get a red filter, it increases the contrasts of your pictures.

medium to dark orange for b/w film. i found red to be too disadvantaggeous on hte resulting shutter speed, and yellow to be not much of an effect
