SINGAPORE - Singapore share prices stocks fell sharply in late-morning trade Monday after North Korea announced its first-ever nuclear test.

The Straits Times index was down 34.3 points or 1.3 percent at 2,615.0 after closing last week within sight of its record close of 2,659.85, reached on May 3.

The STI had opened down 5.86 points ahead of the announcement by Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency that the nuclear test had been conducted.

Markets in Japan and Taiwan were closed Monday for public holidays but other regional markets were also under pressure from the news.

In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index was down 1.53 percent or 274.59 points at 17,628.80 at 11:03am (0303 GMT).

In South Korea, the KOSPI index plunged 2.54 percent to 1,317.63 in midday trade.

This is disturbing. :thumbsd: :thumbsd: :thumbsd:
Wonders how will Japan and US react...............

embargo, sanctions, etc... the usual stuff.

i'm interested in what Russia and China have to say. it makes me wonder if both these countries still support communism in a indirect manner.

no way. the military option will not be used so easily.

no one has credible intelligence on N korea. no one knows how many nukes they have. if the world launches a strike on NK, they may randomly fire off 10 nukes to different parts of the world. China, Japan, India, S Korea may all be hit and decimated.

I hope not. Global Police United States is stretched pitifully thin in Iraq, and if they want to start a second theatre of operations have not got that many forces in South Korea and Japan to stand up to the North Korea's million-man army.

If it goes to an armed conflict, the US might use drone vehicles, or non-conventional weapons such as microwave bombs that disable hi-tech devices.

But China and Japan have taken a unified stance toward North Korea, and it could signal the ascendancy of China as a military power if she leads a stand against North Korea, together with a coalition of concerned nations (such as Japan, which has already been nuked twice).

I for one feel that North Korea is a wild cannon that needs to be reined in one way or another before it gets out of control.

gives the ruler a sense of power

why outrage?
india pakistan china us england? france Israel southafrica? russia
have done so

n korea feels they do not need china anymore
oh, good

n korea does not know the monster it is giving excuse to rearm

JAPAN

"Analysts say North Korea probably has enough fissile material to make six to eight nuclear bombs but probably lacks the technology to devise one small enough to mount on a missile." --STI

well the fanatics here are screaming for punishment to be taken. and NKorea dont have a million man army, they have a million starving people and if they take action, food and monetary aid will be cut off.

Are these the same experts who say north korea are buffing when they say they have the bomb?

that will be very very sad indeed, the people are innocent.:( :(

Can't really understand why would they want to carry out the first test at the beginning... :(

they knew the other countries would jump on them... -___-"

 Is it wrong in self defense?
What about countries that produce weapons? and for sale? nukes or no nukes they are just the same..

North Korea is playing an daring chess game.

Either they wins to escape the interntioanl embargo, if not, checkmate.

Another option : Military Option.
Try it and see what happens.

It doesn't take one with background in Political Science to know what would happen if the world were to adopt this option.

All we have to wait is for Mr.Bush to send in the F-117 Stealth Fighters and B-2 stealth bombers. USA will save the world again.
Save the world by sending it back into Stone Age.

Yes. I would love that.
