When the PRC-made iPhones and iPads were sold in USA, no one complained. Millions of US consumers queued up to buy.
Most toys bought for children around Christmas time are made in PRC nowadays. Again no one complained.

So what is the fuss over the uniform for the athletes?
Lawmakers angry U.S. Olympics uniforms made in China | 11alive.com

Take note - the complaint is NOT because the uniforms were of low quality; or badly tailored; or of inferior material.
Some US lawmakers complained just because the uniforms were made in PRC and for no other reason.

The uniforms were designed by Ralph Lauren.

So does it mean Olympics athletes should wear only attire made in their own country?

The USOC was just getting the best quality and value for money when sourcing for the uniforms. Saving tax payers' money. Anything wrong with that?

yes. you need to understand how the economy works.

iPads and iPhones, while made in china, profits goes to Apple, which is based in... USA. All profits earned, is by Apple, the income stays within the US economy.

now, when you are talking about imports, take note that the income flows outwards. The firms that are producing these, are owned by chinese companies i believe, not by the US. essentially, income flows out of the US economy, into China's economy.

and it is also an issue of national pride when tension between US and China are still rising.

A lot of US-based MNCs have operations (fully-owned or JV) in tax-friendly countries to avoid having to repatriate money back to the US where the corporate tax is significantly higher.

With $64 billion in cash remaining offshore, Apple executives said during a conference call on Monday that they have no plans to bring that money back to the U.S. because of taxes. For some time now, Apple has lobbied the U.S. government for a tax holiday that would give the company an incentive to bring that money stateside.

It's a sad fact......it happens in all the advance country when labor and living std is ultra high......SG has the similar FT issue to deal with.....so can we blame some folks who lobbying patriotism? If one day all the technology advantage lost(in fact it's already happening from car, electronic or even airplane) American will left with nothing and their have to work for some other country.....that will be the massive blow :p

hmm? well they did lobby for it:bsmilie: then its just a matter of pride lor.

Total Cost for Men’s Uniforms: US$1,945 x 261 athletes = US$507,645
Total Cost for Women’s Uniforms: US$1,473 x 269 athletes = US$396,237

The US lawmaker in the video said the USOC should put the brand new un-used made-in-PRC uniforms in a pile and burn them. (after having paid for them)
And spend money all over again to make them in USA. So wasteful. Not to mention that today is about 14 days away from the Olympics opening ceremony. A rush order to make new ones in such a short time will cost a lot more.

Nope. This has also been heavily discussed. Apple keeps the profit in the overseas offices and almost NOTHING of Apple's profits goes to the US economy. Also, the issue with Ralph Lauren is jobs... And Apple mostly hires outside the USA too.

actually, don't even need tax payers' money, those uniforms are sponsored... that's why there's the huge Polo logo on the jacket...

Its an Election year... need I said more...
They are always in an election cycle... they have federal elections every two years, not counting state and lower elections... which results in "short-termism" in policy, designed to get one elected/re-elected rather than planning for the long term...

Most of the profits stay with Apple, but not necessarily within the US economy... they park their money overseas where they can dodge US taxes... and because of that, they withhold moneys from the US economy, and billions (yes, with a "B", not an "M") from the US tax authorities...

and I believe the way Apple produces their gadgets is similar to the way western brand garments are manufactured in China: the western company puts out a contract to the company operating in China (may be a China company, a Taiwan company, or even, you may be surprised to learn especially in the garment industry, a Singapore company) to produce products under the western company's brand, whether the product is a phone or a jacket... there are companies which own (usually as a joint venture) their own factories in China (Apple is not one of them), but usually manufacturing is under contract to a third party... so balance of payments, whether for phones or for garments, would be similar...

they don't care about the cost because the uniforms are sponsored by PRL... if tax payers moneys were involved, they would not dare to say burn it cause then tax payers moneys would be wasted, not to mentioned more tax payers moneys would have to be used to pay for new uniforms in a rushed order...

There is a quote I read from somewhere....

"God created Humans. Everything else is Made in China"

buy uniform from china is ok lar. but dont buy TV , will explode one. Jacky Chan said one. lol.

I guess there is more to it. After all, the 2 Democrat US lawmakers are intelligent and smart. Normally they don't make such statements.
Just discovered this post.

The Next Obama Angle: Romney Outsourced Olympic Uniforms

Back in 2002, when Mitt Romney was president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games of 2002, the USA team's uniforms were produced in Canada. And not in USA. So the recent remarks may be aimed at Romney. They knew the media will dig it up.
