Shooting Thematically Workshop by Chow Chee Yong
Focusing on the widely growing concept of thematic photography, this workshop by veteran photographer Chow Chee Yong will aid photographers in understanding how a group of photographs can be used to emphasize a particular topic or concept. Topics covered in the workshop will aid photographers in undertaking a thematic project in the future, like understanding the thought process, how to think along the same line for an extended period of time, moulding your image-making skills, and what kind of subject matter to look out for in order to hold the attention of a viewer.

Venue: Singapore Management University, School of Economics/School of Social Sciences, 90 Stamford Road (Seminar Room 5-1, Level 5)

Participant Requirements: Participants should have been using photography as a medium for several years, and have gone beyond the basic questioning of shutter speed, aperture or the like.

About Chow Chee Yong
Chow Chee Yong is a lecturer in the Department of Visual Communication at Temasek Design School in Temasek Polytechnic (Singapore). He is a BFA (Honours) graduate in Photography from Western Michigan University, USA, where he received a scholarship for his MA (Distinction) degree in Photography from Musashino Art University, Tokyo, Japan. Chee Yong has since participated in more than 30 solo and group exhibitions across Asia and the Pacific, and some of his works were even featured in international publications such as Passages North (USA) and Nippon Camera (Japan).
Introduction to Photography & Personal Works Review Session by Teo Chai Guan
One of the top-ranked advertising photographers in the world, Chai Guan will be introducing participants to the many different formats of photography, as well as a basic understanding of photography’s various categories. Besides sharing his extensive knowledge and experience in the making of advertising photography projects, he will also be giving participants the rare opportunity to have their personal works reviewed by him and hear his invaluable input as a top professional photographer.

Venue: Singapore Management University, School of Economics/School of Social Sciences, 90 Stamford Road (Seminar Room 4-2, Level 4)
Capacity: 12 participants
Participant Requirements: Participants should own a DSLR and submit a minimum of 10 works in softcopy format at least 2 weeks prior to workshop. Participants need not be at a professional/industry level, but should have a general interest in photography with some personal works done.

About Teo Chai Guan
Having established Teo Studio and himself as a commercial photographer in 1997, Chai Guan specializes in producing conceptual advertising work consisting of still life, portrait, lifestyle, and landscape photography for agencies both locally and regionally. Proven in his ability to stay versatile and flexible, Chai Guan has received several international awards from prestigious festivals such as Cannes, D&AD, One Show, CA, Clio, and Adfest. He is currently ranked 1st in Singapore and 8th internationally under Archive’s acclaimed advertising photographers ranking. Beside commercial photography, Teo also actively pursues his other major interest, which is in fine art photography.
Reportage photography (Talk cum workshop) by Mathias Heng
This highly informative hands-on workshop on Reportage Photography will focus on the many important elements that go into creating a body of work, such as the practical aspects required and how to capture the meaning behind the project. Besides sharing his personal experiences and thoughts, Mathias will be imparting his expertise on how to develop the necessary thinking skills in creating compelling images and concepts for photo essays, as well as critiquing participants’ work after a practical shooting session.
Date: 30 October 2010, 1 – 5 pm
Venue: Meeting Room, National Library Building 100 Victoria Street
Capacity: 15 pax
Participant Requirements: Participants must have knowledge in camera usage and preferably a prime lens 35mm if not a kit lens ranging from 18-55mm. Participants are required to bring their own camera, card reader and thumb drive. Participants should also bring their previous images for pre and post workshop comparison.

About Mathias Heng
Images from Humanity issues have a powerful effect on Mathias. For that reason, he decided to become a photojournalist, and in his travels to places of war, disaster, poverty and human struggle, Mathias has photographed several conflicts and their effects on the civilian population, producing a body of emotionally moving documentary work that capture key moments and turning points in history. Mathias’ work appears in international publications throughout Asia and Europe, and in spite of his exposure to many atrocities, Heng has never lost his passion and commitment to humanity, or his ability to capture images which speak to people around the globe.
