read on the internet the 2x is more flexible than the 3x.... so I am probably looking for the 2x... i'll wait until someone tires of their coolpix accessories then get one. ;-) i've got more time than money.

I think 3x teleconverter is better. Firstly, money constraint, the difference is not much. Secondly, what you have mentioned about the "flexible" is 2x Tc-E2 can combine with other lens to become a "combo" (what they called). But one thing is the image quality will be affected. Furthermore, for the $$$ you spend for the combo, might as well get a sharpshooter ? Nikon produce the best teleconverter, follow by Olympus B300. But B300 discontinue already. Attach one lens(teleconverter) in my opinion, already enough. if "combo" again, really not worth it!:p
