Hi,

I am looking for a compact that gives me flexibility for learning. Have searched out a few models, any suggestions which is a better buy, nikon p5000 or canon powershot g7? there's also other models by panasonic and olympus.. I'm quite new in photography, can somebody pls help?

Thanks! ;)

Is this your first camera ?

some consideration are
- budgets , G7 is more expensive then P5000
- ease of control, how you like to camera's control in manual setting,
e.g. i like the dial on G7

- to the shop / borrow from friend and try it out :)

check out the reviews at dpreview for both camera :)

personally i prefer G7 over P5000, although I am nikon user ...
if budget allows, consider a 2nd entry level dslr , e.g. d50 / d40 + second hand kit lens - e.g. 18-70mm

it is actually on wat u prefer like wat kinda features is it user friendly and blah blah blah

For new photographer, I will advise one cam with manual control..... G7 I know should have.... p5000 I not sure....

Yup this is my first camera. Am looking for a compact one rather than bulky DSLR...

Nikon P5000 has manual control too.

Thanks for the advise so far.. Hope there'll be more. :)

P5000 seems rather nice for its size and design.

I am keen to buy it too.

wait a minute....

do a thorough research first at
www.dpreview.com
www.dcresource.com

they should have reviews for both the cameras, and maybe comparisons too...

personally, i would go for the G7, if its between G7 and P5000....:bsmilie:

but...how about an S5 IS, which is cheaper(and pr0-bably better) than a G7...

between P5000 and the G7, i'd go for the G7 without much consideration.
the shutter lag on the P5000 is a deal breaker for me

the tougher choice would be between the G7 and the S5 IS

If you are looking for a good camera with manual controls that will not break the bank, try the A570 IS.

I second the A 570... it image is good, and pricing is even BETTER!!!

d40 is compact enough to be placed in your bag.. with the options of changing your lens in the future. If not the Oly e410 should fit too, it is like a dslr without a proper grip.

Hmm according to the specs

P5000 has a better ISO range,
more powerful flash
hotshoe
better LCD

but canon compacts has been know to produce very nice out of camera photos

and A640 is cheaper
have a better macro range 1cm, wider 35mm lens and more zoom 140mm
better shutter range max 8sec, mind 1/2500

My advise would be to go down to a shop and try both.. :)
