Hi Gurus,

Thought I'd tap on the wealth of wisdom you guys have.

I was going to get the D5100, then the D3200 comes along.
Making the choice that much sweeter.
But that much harder.

Thinking of an all round upgrade to my D60.
Pairing it with a VRI 18-200 & 35m 1.8
Taking family/travel shots & the occasional HD Video.

Retail for a D3200 kit will be about $900+/-.
Market for a D5100 kit has already dropped below $1000.
So pricewise should be very close.

Now it's a tough toss up...

IMHO. Both seem to have very comparable features.
Both would be equally good sensors, ignoring the 16MP vs 24.2MP.
I'm guessing the 24.2MP is some variant of the very well regarded NEX-7 Sensor.
Then the 16MP is the celebrated D7000 sensor.
Both shoot HD, have ext. mic input

Why I'd get a D5100.

- Flip Screen
- Auto Bracketing
- Potentially better High ISO perf.

Why I'd get the D3200.

- Wireless iPhone Connectivity
- Wireless Composing/Shutter Control (Might even beat the Flip screen!)
- Potentially better Movie (AF-F)?
- Expeed 3

Both seem to meet the needs more than well.
But a choice of two beauties.

What do you guys think?
Which would you guys go for & why?

D3200 do not have iphone connectivity at this point in time. You will have to wait for it. For now, it connects to Andriod devices only.

But that said, i think D3200 is a very value for money option, especially with the new cheap wifi adapter. I would wait for D5200 and D7100 also to see if they will be wifi compatible. Exciting times indeed!

I believe the D7100 or the D5200 might be just around the corner...

Exactly right - exciting times!

The D5200/D7100 when they come should def share similar wireless compatibility.
Only downside is having to keep the side cap open when in use.

Sharing what i found...
So iPhone connectivity should happen in Q3 2012.

" The optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter for the D3200 allows the connected user to easily share photos taken on the D3200 to an Android™ platform based smartphone or tablet, so friends and family can enjoy the moment almost as quickly as it happens.(1) Android platform users are able to wirelessly transfer images from the camera to a mobile device, preview the image before shooting photos, and even remotely control the camera from up to 49 feet. The Application for use with an Android platform smartphone (2.3 series) and tablet (3.x series) is expected for release in May 2012.(2) Additionally, an Application for the iPhone® and iPad® mobile digital device is expected for release in Fall 2012.(3) "

Exciting eh? I'd get the D3200. The wifi will prove to be quite useful I believe.

I always believe that newer is better so my vote goes to the D3200 (which also comes in RED)

Connectivity is not an issue for me since I use an Eye-Fi card.

Especially for the instant print and live projection people...

like them LiveStudios folks.
Or makes barriers to entry for such an industry easier.

newer is better. :)
is bigger number better? :)
nikon seems to have turned this thing on its head.

until the d5200 arrives.
what used to differentiate the d5100 from the d3100 is all but gone.

Skip this D3200... wait for D5200

See what a D5100 swivel lieveiew can do - shoot the celiing lamp without sleeping on the floor. I think this is useful if shooting ceiling artwork too

yeah. i'd consider the D5100 for the swivel screen alone.
the wifi is good in theory, not so sure about practice.
holding both a camera & phone as secondary viewfinder.
