Nikon FM exposure/light meter

How do you read it??

My girlfriend's dad just dug out his recently, kept in a dry box for 28years. it still looks awesome, ran thru a roll with it. works perfectly. went to find the batteries, placed it in but how do i read the exposure meter in the viewfinder? there's a + , 0 and a - sign. it's stucked at - even when i try to overexposed it.anyone!

have you tried walk out and aim anything under the sun light?

btw, FM light meter is LED type, so if you able see the LED, means battery is still working.
