I am new to this DSLR world and am planning to get a nikon D90. And i am interested in taking all kinds of photos as a hobby.

I did went for a ride to check the prices in funan and in peninsula.

Lowest price was quoted @ around s$1330 (bally photo) and higest at s$1680 in one of the shop for D90 with kit.
most of the shops quoted s$1450.
Body alone was quoted from S$1100 to s$1300

I need your suggestion in deciding the below:

Shall i go for the low quoted @ bally? Is this a reliable shop?
I am also planning to get a Body and a seperate lens. Which is the recommended lens?
My budget for lens is around s$600.

Thoughts please

D90 is a great camera for starting out in digital photography. Please do a search on this forum on the reputation of bally photo and draw your own conclusion :)

bally photo.... Hmmm...I have read somewhere in this forum saying that a bad reputation shop. If you can, get a 2nd hand first b4 you head into the DSLR world.

The huge electronics chain stores, like Harvey Norman, BEST, will sell at RRP. There's an option to buy extended warranty from them.

If you want good price and honest deal, go with the mainstream stores, like TK, MS Color, Alan, Cathay, and John.

You can consider second handed well maintained D90 for much lesser than what you've been offered. No way we can accurately recommend you a lens since you have not specialised yet, but you might as well start with a kit lens 18-55 / 18-105 etc. In due time after much shooting, you'll filter down to exactly what you'll want to shoot, then that is when you'll know what kind of specialised lens you might want to go for (Macro, Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Wildlife, etc etc), but be forewarned - some specialised lenses can go further than 600 and even more... Kit lenses do not cost too much...generally much lower than 600 (check the price guide on CS to know more).

For 600 and slightly more, you might want to consider the 18-55 / 55-200 combo...that will give you a wide coverage of focal lengths...

But don't rush to get them, read more about lenses at Photozone.de and understand what you're getting into...

I will recommend the 18-135mm or 18-200mm lens as long as the lens fits your budget.

check out the threads in the consumer subforum.

You have to firm and a strong character to buy from Bally, else.... just go and read the subforum.

i like the way you put it.. "Firm and Strong character"

Not only with the "B", previously I had same experience with smal small shop in Sim Lim.

For TS, if you keen to buy from Bally photo due to the low price, better to go there with an experienced friend to accompany you.

FYI, John 3:16 price may not be the cheapest, but they have the best customer service and trustworhy ;)

Guess what.. they told me they have stock but need to collect from his store nearby.

Well I said.. okay.. pls do take for me.
I ask him about the price.. was quoted S$65 :sweatsm:

Thanks. Photozone.de is helping me a lot.

I trust only Cathay Photo @ennisula or MS Color @ AMK
but bought mine at Cathay D90 + 18-105 for $1500 two months ago.
