By Nikon's claimed measurements the FX-format 300mm f/4 is 30% shorter and 1.5 lbs lighter than its predecessor, thanks to the use of a Phase Fresnel design. It boasts four and a half stops in image stabilization.
Nikon isn't alone in using a Fresnel lens design - Canon uses it under the name 'diffractive optics', or DO. The EF 400mm F4 DO IS II USM uses the technology and was just launched at Photokina. Both manufacturers use the Fresnel design to create smaller, lighter lenses with relatively fewer lens elements compared to conventional optics.
The lens will be available in early February-March - at USD $1999.95.

This new version is 545 grams lighter than the former model at a total weight of under 800 grams !!

It's good news but I can't help thinking why Canon only have 2 DO lenses in the lineup if this technology is successful.
Electro-magnetic aperture - does that mean it is going to be incompatible with older Nikon bodies?
All G-Lens have this.... Compatibility is the same as per G-Lenses.... Not compatible with certain bodies.
E-Lens like the PC-E tilt-shifts have no mechanical lever to actuate the aperture I believe
