The most is only a 1.4x TC since 1 stop light loss from f6.3 is quite alot. A body with better iso performance might get better with the combi of 500f6.3 + TC. but no guarantee wide open at 500mm is tad sharp.

The 300mm f/2.8 is definitely sharper wide open. The 200-400mm VR II that I'm using right now is a great lens, not as sharp and heavier. But the flexibility of the zoom drew me to the lens.
