Hi, Im waiting for 24-120 F4 before it reach Singapore but after I check the price cost about $1680 for a F4 lens I hold back and compare the 28-300mm which cost $1330, cheaper and longer range.
IQ is better in 24-120 but it not really that much different.
120 at F4 and 300 at F5.6 is a big different in rang but only 1 stop different.

Anyone like to share your view about this 2 lens?

Nikon D700/F2/F60/ N24f2.8, N35f2, N50f1.4, AIS85f1.8, Tokina 20-35f2.8, SB900, CanonF1 /C50f1.4

I see that you don't have a walkabout lens, 28-300 mm will give benefit with longer focal length. But 24-120 f/4 will give you benefit with constant aperture. So it depends on what do you shoot :)

Depend on what you usually shoot. But I feel that 300 on a FF is also not that far.

28-300 is mainly a budget 1 lens for FF which can generally covered most type of shots.

you have own several constant aperture primes, you sure wanna own a variable aperture lens?

As a general rule of thumb, the more you zoom, the more the IQ gets compromised. 24-120mm gets my vote and it's definitely worth that extra 300+...

But then again, you may need that 300mm to meet your shooting needs. It's also difficult for us to comment on that.

The 24-120's constant aperture is preferred if you often shoot on manual mode.

I think getting a lens with compromised image quality on FF doesn't really make sense, since you're buying FF system for their better IQ in the 1st place.

I'm sharing my view about the 28-300 as a user, and use it concurrently with a 24-70.

As you said, the IQ of the 24-120 is not really that much different from the 28-300. From real world pictures i'm seeing, there is almost no discernable differences to the naked eye when comparing to the 24-120, so I would surely beg to differ that using the 28-300 on FF is in any way compromising image quality. The utility you will get from the 28-300 might just be able to outweigh any marginal IQ differences. I bought the 28-300 primarily for travel just so I have all my bases covered. So I guess you will have to see where your needs lie.

Comparing 120mm for both, the difference in max aperture of F4 vs F5.6 really isn't all that earth shattering. In fact, F4 really isn't considered fast, isn't it? In low light, shooting moving objects, neither the 24-120 or 28-300 will cut it.

Thanks for all the sharing, my friend is also using 28-300 now on D700 and the IQ is good enough according to him and 24-70f2.8 is heavy and long hardly use it. There is once he almost drop the lens on the floor when changing lens.

I just came back from Taiwan holiday, and most of the time i'm using 20-35 f2.8. Change to 50f1.4 few time only and really not easy to keep changing lens on the move with a backpack.
Prime lens give me good IQ and light weight, dont mind changing lens when Im carrying a my side Domkie bag. Then again after walking for 2days with the load my shoulder Bei Tahan.

Will consider again, Im more toward 24-120f4 with the build and wide 24mm.

How well it perform at 24f4?

Well, the 28-300 is only 100gm lighter than the 24-70.. comparing both, i don't really feel much difference in weight, but i know if i were travelling, it means i don't need to carry another lens for the telephoto end, so less weight overall :)

I tested out both the 28-300 and 24-120 when buying, and in terms of built, I don't see much difference too heh.. very comparable to the 24-70

Thanks for your infor

I bought the 24-120f4 2 weeks ago.
It took me quite awhile to consider between these 3 lens 28-300, 24-120 and 24-70. The main reason for getting a zoom lens is for my holiday trip, happen to visit Japan next month. Zoom lens will come in handy as i no need to change on the go. Overall, its a good walkabout/travel lens, shots at f4 offers decent bokeh and IQ at least for me :bsmilie:
Oh ya, just for consumer sharing, if you shop more intensive, you can find prices nearer to $1600 range :)

The 24-120 F4 is a very good contender as an alternative to the legendary 24-70 f2.8, at lesser weight and longer reach :)

Already have a wide 17-35......so 28-300 for me

Talking about constant aperture...well...for outdoor....I will probably stop down to F5 to F8 anyway so it's not that concern for me....for indoor....probably need a flash or switch back to my trusty Tammy 28-75 f2.8 then

only scored :xmas::xmas: :sweat:

lol he bashed it just like any other consumer lens.

i still dun quite convince with the performance of 24-120, thought it's almost the same as 28-300. maybe i need more testing....btw, the build quality for this gold ring lens is only so so.

imxian kindly loaned me his for some shots when I met him for a photo shoot at supreme courts open house last week. The built is pretty ok to me instead of just so so.

Maybe I don't have high expectations.

Anyone have picture taken with 28-300 to share here?
