Road collapses along Nicoll Highway
A PORTION of Nicoll Highway near the Golden Mile Complex, where the MRT's Circle Line is being built, appears to have collapsed. Access to the road has been blocked off by police and civil defence officers at the scene.Four workers are missing, according to police spokesman Tan Puay Kern.
Acording to eyewitnesses, the pedestrain bridge across the highway near the affected area also collapsed.
The collapse interrupted the electricity supply to the Marina Centre area, affecting the Esplanade, Suntec City and Marina Square areas, according to a statement from Singapore Power.
Power was restored about 20 minutes later. The statement said the collapse of the road damaged transmission cables supplying the area.
The Land Transport Authority said that the collapse occurred around 3.30pm when excavation works at the Nicoll Highway MRT station transit worksite - part of the Stage 1 of the Circle Line - near the Merdeka Bridge behind Golden Mile collapsed.
The collapse happened at around 3.45 pm, and Singapore Civil Defence personnel are still evacuating commuters from the scene. No information on injuries, if any, has come in so far.
Water is gushing out of the road, and the highway has been cordoned off, including the portion spanning the Kallang River.
Eyewitnesses have reported a power outage in the nearby Suntec City.
A marketing communications manager working at the Suntec City told The Straits Times Interactive that the blackout occurred at around 4pm but was restored within 20 minutes.
She said that the situation is back to normal at Suntec City with aircondition, lights and telephone lines back on.
