SINGAPORE (AP)--Singapore authorities were responding Tuesday to a highway fire on the eastern outskirts of the city''s business district as several nearby high-rises reported blackouts, police and fire authorities said.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths, police spokesman Tan Soo Nik said.
Firefighters were responding to an emergency on Nicoll Highway, Singapore civil Defense Force spokesman Zulkifli Kassim said.
"We''re responding to a fire at Nicoll Highway," Kassim said. "I don''t have any other details at the moment."
State broadcaster NewsRadio 93.8 quoted an eyewitness as saying he saw a 30-foot section of Singapore''s Nicoll Highway had caved in.
Several high-rises in the area were suffering from power outages, the radio reports said.
An eyewitness told Channel News Asia that a pedestrian bridge over the road had also collapsed.
The local TV station also reported the blackouts lasted only 15 minutes, from 0735 GMT.
Singapore''s Land Transport Authority is building a new subway line under Nicoll Highway.

Got a friend working there... heard its a MRT construction that collapsed. Both roads are cracked and the surrounding buildings are being evacuated.
Thanks for the information really. At Gateway we were also affected by blackout. We saw the traffic jams earlier on and thot it was due to an accident. My colleague saw about 4 ambulances travelling upwards Nicoll highway and a fire engine. Hope no casualites though...

Acording to eyewitnesses, the pedestrain bridge across the highway near the affected area also collapsed.
The collapse interrupted the electricity supply to the Marina Centre area, affecting the Esplanade, Suntec City and Marina Square areas, according to a statement from Singapore Power.
Power was restored about 20 minutes later. The statement said the collapse of the road damaged transmission cables supplying the area.
The Land Transport Authority said that the collapse occurred around 3.30pm when excavation works at the Nicoll Highway MRT station transit worksite - part of the Stage 1 of the Circle Line - near the Merdeka Bridge behind Golden Mile collapsed.
The collapse happened at around 3.45 pm, and Singapore Civil Defence personnel are still evacuating commuters from the scene. No information on injuries, if any, has come in so far.
