I am planning to upgrade to d600 from a d90. Am wondering what len to get to complement what I existing have. My current inventory as follow:
- tokina 11-16 dx pro2
- nikon 50mm 1.8d
- nikon 35mm 1.8 dx
- nikon 18-105mm dx vr
- nikon 70-300mm be

Am looking at 24-70mm 2.8 or 24-85mm 3.5-5.6.

Just wondering which is more worth getting. Or any other suggestion. Appreciate any kind advice.

Hi, once you when to FX body and your list to be rearrangement a bit.

Tokina 11-16 keep
50mm 1.8D keep
35mm not need
18-105mm can be keep to instead of 24-85mm VR or non VR. Mean not need buy.
70-300mm keep.

Unless you really wanna feel the pro & heavy weight on D600 and sell the 18-105mm to be replace as 24-70mm G :)

Thanks

Not sure if the advice above works.

Tokina 11-16 is DX lens, uncertain if it will cover FX at all. Someone check please.

18-105 will not cover FX.

So the can keep lenses for D600 are 50 and 70-300. If you like your 11-16 you may find the 24-85 not fast enough, and both 24-70 and 24-85 not wide enough. Consider the cost and weight of 24-70 carefully. Also think about 16-35 and 17-35 as possible options along with the others, as these two lenses cover your Tokina range. I am using D800 but have not settled on the standard zoom range yet. May never get it but use my primes (I have many) to cover that range, and keep my DX camera and 18-105 for those times I need the standard zoom range, typically non critical applications.

The Tokina 11-16mm works on FX from about 15-16mm. I believe some CSers have posted the results before.

I'd get the 24-70mm f/2.8. The 24-85mm hardly impressed me.

Asking questions like that and people will only tell you to buy what they like, not what you need. We don't know what you use the lense for. We don't know your budget. Do you need a f/2.8 lense to begin with? Do you mind carrying a relatively hefty lense around? Do you need the extra reach of the 24-85mm? If you can answer these questions yourself, you will know what to buy.

i think your lenses collection are mainly DX. ever considering staying on with DX?
lower your cost of 'FX" upgrading?
(I reckon only the 50mm f/1.8d and 70-300mm f/3.5-4.5G? are FX lenses)

Thank for all kind advices. Like I say, am upgrading to FX. So am doing house keeping so call. See which can keep, sell or buy.

1st thing just upgrade the body and follow by test with the lens and follow by 1 by 1 house keeping.

Sell
- tokina 11-16 dx pro2
- nikon 35mm 1.8 dx
- nikon 18-105mm dx vr

Get either 16-35 or 24-70mm first.

If got the additional budget,

Sell also - nikon 70-300mm be
and get the 70-200mm ^^

that is sound advise. as the seniors and gurus and pros here always advise, it not the gears but the skills.

Hi,

Why don't you buy 16-35 F/4 instead of 24-70 F/2.8. I do have 24-70G, this lens is excellent. Can't compare with anyother in this range. But what I feel is, 16-35 F/4, 50 F/1.4(D or G version) and 70-200(or 80-200 or 70-300) will cover all the Focal we want.

If you are shooting very low light and need super speed AF, Then you can go for 24-70. Now a days my 24-70 is sleeping in my cabinet.
Everything is your choice :)

Currently you had 50mm and 70-300, so just buy one more to cover all :)

Cool look like TS on budget not a issue.

We just advice all the pro lens.. Ha ha.

Usually we have to asking TS what's the budget 1st, if TS really wanna get all the expansive Lens an he/she won't open this thread already.

I believed all the DX still perform better in FX sensor.

Just take a look on my 28mm reviews :
http://vintagephotograph.weebly.com/compare-from-28mm-distance-only.html

If I was didn't mention the DX lens and who know the comparison have mixed with DX lens..

The 18-70 DX in perform on FX d600 :

Don't get me wrong that $$ not an issue. Just don't want to anyhow shop and end up not using and become white elephant. Worst is an expensive elephant. Heart pain.

Thus seeking advices from seniors and pros how to move forward. Whether should I add new lens or existing one good enough.

Share experience with junior like me on the crossroad between dx and fx .

If your 70--300 is not the VR version, then i suggest you sell all items except 50mm, and get the 24-70. You will get that lens anyway, in the near future, so just get it now, be done and be happy shooting. If you buy the 24-85VR, you will ask the same question again a few months or maybe a year later.

So. Sell all your DX lens. Then buy 16-35 or 24-70. And reviews suggests that 70-300VR is much better than predecessor. Can also think about upgrade.

All these inferior joke-of-a-lens must go:

- tokina 11-16 dx pro2
- nikon 50mm 1.8d
- nikon 35mm 1.8 dx
- nikon 18-105mm dx vr
- nikon 70-300mm be

Smash them all, and replace with these real stuff:

24 f1.4G
35 f1.4G
58 f1.2 noct
85 f1.4G
135 f2DC (temporary made do, but immediately buy the new version once it comes out)
200 f/2
14-24 f2.8
24-70 f2.8
70-200 f2.8

This is the bare minimum kit, ideally you should have 3 sets, one to use, one for backup, another one to keep in pristine condition.

IMHO, if you have to ask such a rudimentary question, its better to upgrade your skills first.

The quest for gear upgrade is always frustrating and met with a lot of disdain and discrimination.

The quest for skill upgrade is always pleasant, satisfying and met with a lot of respect and admiration.
