Having gone round all over the place when I first started - from the type of photography, lusting for new gears, trying different styles of shooting, post-processing applications, etc etc... the best advice is to find out what you want to achieve in picking up digital photography.
There's no right or wrong - but you've to choose an objective to pursue. That's coming from someone who wasted too much time mucking around
You can probably pick up the fundamentals from reading a good book - I recommend "The Fundamentals of Photography by Helen Drew". After that do some serious thinking and shoot shoot shoot
