newbie wanting to buy digi camera

i m new to digital camera and thinking of getting one. anyone can recommend which brand to get with a budget of only $500-$600?
initially thinking of getting olympus mju300 but was told not so cool, any comment on this camera?

I second that! It's one of the few cameras that have the flexibility to use manual controls at such a price.

Anyway, perhaps you should ask yourself what do you want the camera to achieve. Is size an issue? Are you one who wanted to do more creative photography work, or are you intending to use it just for snap-shots?
