Newbie question on DOF

what kind of settings you need to set to take pictures where one part is focused and the other part ( front of back ) is blurred?

Is that somthing to do with DOF ? What settings to change to do that ?

Yes, you need shallow DOF, by using big aperture, that is smallest aperture number.

i am using FZ18 . you mean the aperture value ? It says FXX.. so i need to change this to a very small number ? like F2.4 ? What about shutter speed?

Just a big aperture (small F number) will do. And moving in closer to the subect also decreases the DOF. And using longer focal length (zoom in more). Pick a good balance of all 3 factors.

Longer focal length will also decrease the DOF. So use the longest focal length u can get also.
