newbie qn: How to use ext. flash??

Hi,

Was wondering how to use an external TTL flash? Can anyone share their experience in using a flash.

1) Is the setting for the flash controlled by the camera?
2) Will attaching a flash affect the exposure setting? eg. With and without flash attached.
3) Using as a fill in flash, what are the things that i need to look out for?
4) Are there any webpages to learn about this?

Just wondering. If u have your flash mounted and sometimes u need it and sometimes u don't, what do u do? Switch off the flash? Or is there a better way? cos I find switching on & off the flash frequently may kill it one day.
