Hi all,

Planning to buy a D90 Nikon and a 105mm VR Nikkor lens for jewelry shots.

The thing is a shop in Far east quoted
D90 kit - 1690
105mm VR - 1390

Another shop in Orchard tower
D90 - 1250
105mm VR - 950

all with gst included, now with such a price difference, should I buy from Orchard tower?
are they reliable? or am I getting cheated in Far East?

Tell me more!

Which shops are u refering to exactly? There are many camera shops in those buildings.

But to be honest, a price of 1250 for D90 and 950 for 105VR seems a little too cheap to be real (even cheaper than at B&S). It might be a purchase with purchase price, or they will try to sell u some other stuff at some crazy prices should u decide to purchase from them.

Hi,

Get quotes from the usual good reputation shops like Cathay Photo, MS Colour, Orient Photo, etc before you commit. Just my 2 cents worth.

Hope that you get a good deal.:)

that sounds like a good deal, but I'd say tread with caution.
1250 for D90 body sounds about right.
If you know what to check for (warranty, serial number, etc), then go ahead to buy.
If unsure, stick to the more reputable stores, so less likely to be cheated.
Can consider Tamron macro 90mm for a lower-priced alternative.

Under marketplace, u can see Nikon price guide.....

We have priceguides with recommended shops. If you go to known "chop tourist" shops along ochard, you better know what you're doing.

do urself and all of us a favour... check prices at the reputable shops first..

places esp at far east and orchard tower are not even on my last resort list.:nono:

things like serial number u probably can't check until u actually decide to buy from them and they take out the camera for u

Let me share my experience...

I have an overseas friend who is on holiday almost got tricked by the shop right in front of Orchard Towers (can see the shop from the main road).
I'm not sure did you went to the shop my friend went to.. :dunno:

My friend wanted to buy a Canon 450D (with 18-200mm lens) a few weeks back.
He was quoted $1200 (w/o GST).

He was unsure of the price as it was too low so he gave me a called to ask me to check the RRP for him.
On Canon website, it is $1899.

I call a few reputable shops, and one quoted $1550, after GST refund. (can't remember which shop gave me that price).
So I told him to play with the shop to see their gimmick and record the conversation using his hp..

~~~~~~
The shop then wanted to sell him..
- a UV filter (vitacon) for $40
- 0.5x teleconverter @ $200
- 2x teleconverter @ $300
This is absurd! :sweat:
~~~~~~~

So I think that you should be careful of the prices that they quoted.
Better buy from more reputable shops. ;)

Good luck.

HI, welcome to CS:) Pls look around & go check out prices at different shops if you have the time & get your stuffs from reputable shops. Check out this threads in this forums 1st. ;)
