The Canon 430ex has the slave function right? Does it work stand alone? ie. with the camera's in built flash firing, can the 430ex detect the flash fired and fire along as well?
Or do i have to invest in another master.. ie. the 580ex.. $$

Since you have the flash, why not you try ? :dunno:

Err.. like obviously i tried it and it doesnt work right.. which is why i asked it on this forum in the newbie section dude.

it could be the pre flash of your built in flash trigger the slave flash prematurely, try disable pre flash function of built in flash, using manual flash mode.

you'll need to attach an optical trigger to get it to fire with the built in flash.. it doesn't work by itself..

either that or as you said, another 580EX or ST-E2..

The 430EX won't fire remotely unless you have a master unit.

Shucks.. I gotta spend Extra $$ on a master you mean then.

Any other option besides the 580ex which is ridiculously expensive?
I could get another lens for the price of that.

What are the alternatives? a 550ex?

if you're just looking for wirelessly triggering your flash, theres the speedlite transmitter ST-E2.. about $200 I think..
