Hola everyone! It's been a long time since I look at CS. Now I'm interested to learn and try the DSLR camera. I have read reviews here and everywhere else and still can't decide which to get. Nikon d5000, d3100 or Canon 550d???

Let's do a short comparision:
Nikon D5000 Key Features

* 12.9 megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor (effective pixels: 12.3 million)
* 2.7" tilt and swivel LCD monitor (230,000 dots)
* Movie capture at up to 1280 x 720 (720p) 24 fps with mono sound
* Live View with contrast-detect AF, face detection and subject tracking
* Image sensor cleaning (sensor shake)
* 11 AF points (with 3D tracking)
* IS0 200-3200 range (100-6400 expanded)
* 4 frames per second continuous shooting (buffer: 7 RAW, 25 JPEG fine, 100 JPEG Normal)
* Expeed image processing engine
* Extensive in-camera retouching including raw development and straightening
* Connector for optional GPS unit (fits on hot shoe)
* New battery with increased capacity
* 72 thumbnail and calendar view in playback
Nikon D3100 Key Features

* 14.2 megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor
* 3.0" LCD monitor (230,000 dots)
* Image sensor cleaning (sensor shake)
* 11 AF points (with 3D tracking)
* IS0 100-3200 range (12,800 expanded)
* HD movies (1080, 720p or WVGA)
Canon 550D Headline features

* 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor
* DIGIC 4 processor with ISO 100-6400 (Expansion to 12800)
* Continuous shooting at 3.7fps
* Full HD movie recording with manual control and selectable frame rates
* 7.7cm (3.0”) 3:2 Clear View LCD with 1,040k dots
* iFCL metering System with 63-zone Dual-layer Metering Sensor
* Quick Control screen to change shooting settings
* Exposure compensation +/-5 stops (although viewfinder scale is still +/-2 stops)
* Select maximum value for Auto ISO
* External Microphone socket
* Movie crop function
* Eye-Fi connected functions compatibility
Now, what are your requirements?

D5000 vs D3100:
D5000 has higher fps (4 vs 3) than the D3100
D5000 has swivel screen, D3100 doesn't
D3100 has higher megapixels (doesn't matter so much though)
D3100 can go up to higher ISO level (not sure about quality though)

D5000 vs 550D:
550D has higher megapixels + higher ISO level (same ISO as D3100)
D5000 has a slightly higher (negligible) FPS than 550D

That's my observations from the technical specs. I haven't used any of the above cameras, so can't say much based on personal preference.

Hope the seniors can add on using this information =)

Wow, you joined a long time ago :)
Errr, welcome back.

Cameras, like cars or homes or spouses, are rather personal choices.
Ok, perhaps less of a personal choice than spouse :)
Hehehe.
But the point is that my favorite camera might not be yours, and vice versa.
In terms of specs, probably can't go wrong with either of those choices.
good luck!

Welcome back to CS... looking forward to your sharing... :D

Welcome back:)

Welcome again! Nikon D3100.

Same with me but I wasn't looking at D3100 but Nikon D90 and D500 or Canon 500D or 550D. I ended up with Nikon D5000.

I don't think any of the 4 would make a world of different but of course if you pay more, there should be some additional features. However, you may not need all of those now.

Don't wait too long and join us.

Welcome to CS. Have fun. All are good cams ^^

Welcome to CS! They are all good cams. I suggest you go down to the stores and have some hands on with the camera. It would be good to get 1 thats comfortable in your hands since you will be using it a lot

Do read up on sharing and articles on the vibrancy of the photos shot by Canon vs Nikon. This is something which I missed out in my research when I bought my DSLR...

Hard decision..... Good Luck .. you pay for it... Love in first look and feel.. All are good cam..

My take...either D5000 or 550D. Pick one that you feel comfortable with.

Hi there. you're lucky.. i asked the same question and got f-ed by these people here. :bsmilie:

from experience, it's best to go down to the retailers to try it out. Don't discount the Sony A33 from your list. hehehe. (Note: i'm nt a sony fan boy, i'm a new user myself. i'm just saying from my experience of using this camera)

Welcome to CS . . . ;)

hope you have made up your mind . . . :bsmilie:
