As reported in channel news asia, the new seven wonders of the world list is out.
The list includes Great Wall of China, the Coliseum in Rome, Taj Mahal in India, the centuries-old pink ruins of Petra in Jordan, the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, and the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza in Mexico.

I think the result is ridiculous and very political!.....
How could one exclude the Great Pyramid of Egypt, the Angkor Wat, Cambodia and the Borobudur, Central Java, INDONESIA.

It would be very interesting to see what and how did they base their results on.

At least the exercise probably raised interest and awareness about conservation etc.
Anyway according to the CNA article:

"However, the UN cultural body that designates world heritage sites declined to support the event.

'The list of the seven new wonders will be the result of a private initiative which cannot contribute in any significant or lasting way to the preservation of the elected sites,' the Paris-based UNESCO said in a statement last month. "

If anyone plans to go around shooting the new 7 wonders, let me know :bsmilie:

The slot for statue at Rio shuld hv been replaced with Acropolis or Angkor Wat.

7 wonders is indeed too few for earth...

Unesco slams seven 'new' wonders of the world list
LISBON - THE United Nations body for culture blasted a private initiative that drew nearly 100 million Internet and telephone voters to choose seven 'new' wonders of the world.
'This campaign responds to other criteria and objectives than that of Unesco in the field of heritage,' said Ms Sue Williams, the spokesman for Unesco, the UN cultural body that designates world heritage sites.
'We have a much broader vision,' she said.
......

According to its backers, the campaign aimed to update the original list of seven world wonders, drawn up in around 200 BC, of which only the pyramids of Giza remain today.
Short-listed sites that missed the final cut included the Acropolis in Athens; Paris' Eiffel Tower; the Easter Island statues; Britain's Stonehenge; Cambodia's Angkor Wat temples; New York's Statue of Liberty; and the Alhambra in Spain.
Mr Christian Manhart, Unesco's press officer, criticised the ballot, saying it sent out a 'negative message to countries whose sites have not been retained'.
'All of these wonders obviously deserve a place on the list, but what disturbs us is that the list is limited to just seven,' he said, pointing out that 'seven were adequate in Antiquity because the Antique world was much smaller than today', only comprising the area surrounding the Mediterranean.
The privately-sponsored campaign was the brainchild of a Swiss filmmaker and museum curator Bernard Weber, following the destruction of Afghanistan's giant Buddha statues at Bamiyan by the Taleban in 2001, and part of the money made on Saturday's ceremony was to go towards rebuilding the massive sculptures.
But Mr Manhart said 'Unesco is not in favour of rebuilding the Buddhas', pointing out that valuable remains of the old statues remain in the rocky niches that make up the site.
'If you build new statues in these niches you destroy those remains,' he said. In light of the strong Islamist presence in Afghanistan, Mr Manhart also insisted it would be difficult to rebuild another religion's 'idols' in the country. 'Mr Weber does not have a mandate from the Afghan government, and without a mandate you can't do anything,' he argued. -- AFP

Bah. This is just another kind of "Idol" voting that is popular nowadays. It is based on popularity, not on any scientific or cultural basis. Obviously those more tourist friendly sites will garner more votes.

Just wondering why Borobudur (Indonesia) nor Forbidden City (China) not among the finalist.

Sydney Opera House, Statue of Liberty, Christ Redeemer, Eiffel Tower should be listed among the modern wonders category.

Salute to the Great Pyramids of Giza as an Honorary 7Wonders Candidate and the only Ancient 7 Wonders still around.

ok, ok .... got the infor that because the Great Pyramid is the ONLY one of the "old wonders" list, it will be automatically included as the 8th Wonders of the New World ......

I feel that the Borobudur should be included because it is the BIGGEST Buddhist temple on the Planet Earth, and it is part of the progress of human civilization ...., and
the Angkor Wat ....

Probably take out the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro and the Taj Mahal in India (dont think this is a major link in civilization, it's more like a one person's showpiece)

just being naughty...

I am one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Wonder Woman! :cheergal:
