New rechargeable batteries or new camera with lithium battery?

I'm currently using an old PnS that uses 2 x AA-sized batteries, and I have been using 2500mAh rechargeable NiMH batteries.

I have been using the batteries for a couple of years already and I notice that fully-charged 2 x 2500mAh batteries only give me about 30 to 40 shots before draining completely. I wonder if this is normal and expected for rechargeable batteries or this is due to the batteries degrading over time due to wear-and-tear?

I now have 2 options:
  1. buy new Eneloop rechargeable batteries that should retain charges better
  2. buy a new camera that uses built-in lithium batteries for longer lasting battery life between requiring recharging

Any advice?

I've the same problem with my Sony H5 when I use it with flash

This is what you can do:

1. Get 2700mAh rechargeable batteries

2. Charge the batteries the night before because they loose their charge very quickly

3. Get 1 spare set as backup

Note: the Eneloop is only 2000mAh
